Topic: What to specifically ask insurance company
What should I specifically ask my insurance company to find out if they cover weight loss surgery.  The gentleman  I spoke with tonight said that he didn't see anything that specifically say it will not cover WLS.  Btw, it's Cigna that I have now.

Calling customer service takes a LONG time because all they want to tell you is that bariatric surgery is a covered benefit not what the requirements are. So if you can stop them from telling you what is covered and coerce them into telling you the requirement that is what you need to do.

Mine has a six month supervised weight loss but they are VERY open about any method of weight loss as long as it's supervised and you can provide records.

Brenda...agreed on customer reps...can call em 10 different times n gettin 10 different answers...me 3 TIMES before I got someone that gave a **** about me! I stuck with her throughout...including DENIAL

BCBS of Cali...DOES NOT REQUIRE medically supervised weight loss inc. ALL PPO insurance cos...HMOs like KAISER....you can get even THEIR medically supervised Optifast m.s. diets WAIVED!!.... ...THE WHOLE STATE

its been found to be a WASTE OF TIME and MONEY....California Dept of Managed Health Care
and California Insurance Commision

I would call and find out what the appeal process is. Since they've already asked you about the appeal process, I am thinking that may be your only route for getting it covered. It also may just be a State of FL thing too.

Good luck!

My surgeons office gave me a sample to give to my PCP. I dont have it anymore otherwise I would post it. If I remember it gave info such as my age, height, weight, bmi, co-morbidities and the different weight loss attempts and the doctor stated she felt it was medically necessary for me to have the surgery. Most PCP's are used to writing such letters and should already know what to include. Its pretty simple.
