Personal loan or refinancing your house if you own one are two good possible options. Luckily for me I got a loan from my dad but I was prepared to refinance my house in order to do this.

Hopefully you will be able to figure something out :-) Good luck

THANKS

Topic: What really is the truth?
Sooooooo......I go to my  doctor last friday , finishing up the 2nd to last month of my 6 month doctor  supervised diet. (My tentative surgery date is feb 7th) I tell my doctor i'm interested in the sleeve more so now than the RNY. Geesh -she then gave me a lecture on how much more weight you lose with the bypass vs. sleeve and asks me if I have discussed this with my surgeon. I said that the surgeon talked about the surgeries already a few months back at my consultation.  Clearly she is not open to any other surgery than RNY.

Sooooooo...today i call up the surgeon's office to let them know I was leaning toward the sleeve more so now than the RNY. Unfortunately sleeve is not covered with my insurance for BMI's under 50 ( i'm 44). So as we were discussing my dilemma, the person I was talking to asked me why I didn't want RNY, and I stated my issue with the malabsorption and it only lasting about 2 years, so then she said to me.."WHERE IN THE WORLD DID YOU HEAR THAT FROM!!??"....well of course if you say the "internet" you will get laughed at so I just said I had read some articles on the subject. So they basically in so many words said it was untrue, and that bypass has changed over the years.

So what really is the truth?? from what I see the VSG's lose a pretty comparable amount of weight comparared to the RNY. Also I have only read a zillion times on here about malabsorption of fat lasting only a few years with the RNY'ers.  Is that just urban legend or what?

Oh yeah, and my boss is probably gonna change our insurance coverage in june to a crappier plan that won't cover bariatric surgery, so if I wait to see if my plan evenually covers VSG's for BMI's below 50 I may lose out on getting ANY type of WLS. (no pressure here LOL)

Thanks for letting me vent

Sleeves and Mexico go hand in hand and i'll explain why.

If you were to get a band in MX in some states it can be hard to find aftercare.  Same with bypass. But with a sleeve you are not dependent on a bariatric surgeon.  Let's say the worst case scenario, you spring a leak.  You can go to any GI surgeon, any general surgeon, or any non band mill bariatric surgeon, our choices are huge where other surgery types are limited for aftercare.

And really, you don't need aftercare for a sleeve.  You need annual labs that your PCP can do and you email the results to your surgeon.

Weight loss is great, it's the safest surgery type long term, and it is maintenance free.  I absolutely love my sleeve.  If you have any questions about it please let me know!

The band got me to goal, the sleeve will keep me there.

BTW, might want to check out my blog and see HOW to research a MX or US surgeon.  I don' have one for bypass or DS yet.

After a few back and forth phone calls and several re-reads of my insurance exclusion policy it is confirmed - they do not cover any type of obesity treatment at all. Crazy, I know. I know it's just the plan that I'm on - not necessarily the insurance company. I have the same company (Humana) that approved a breast reduction 2 years ago, and if they'd approve that they'd approve this.

Again- it is my particular plan level, not the main insurance co - an important distinction to remember. I have the option of upgrading but I"m going to wait and see what the new year brings in terms of promotion at work, husband's potential new job, etc. I only just started thinking about this so I'm not very far down the track at all.

Financing certainly is an option - my car is paid off in July and that monthly bit of budget could easily go towards this.

If you've financed - how did you do it? Regular credit cards, personal loan, cosmetic credit?

I went to Mexico and wrote a check... twice.  Ugh.  But well worth the results.  I started out with a band and revised to a sleeve.

What surgery type are you considering?

I think it will be at the same rate, since the surgeon and hospital are both contracted to Aetna. I hope... I will make some more calls and find out..
