Hello, I am asking this question for my brother. He has gone to one doctor who told him this procedure would be done on an Outpatience basis, Then there is another one who makes you stay 2 days in the hospital.......What is the difference? Thanks for answers!!!! He is wanting this surgery in a very bad way,,,,,,,,He can't wait. Thanks again. DeeDee Chandler Gastric Bypass done on 1/20/03 298/164

DeAnn, I am one month post-op. I spent one night in hospital for observation and then released as soon as I did barium swallow test the next morning. It went very easy and was back home recouping in no time. Marti 314/287/150

I stayed overnight (surgery 11am) and I stayed until 7pm the next day. I was ready to go home several hours before I was discharged. I have heard of people having surgery at like 8am and going home around dinner time. It depends on the doctor and how much pain the patient's in. Wish him luck! You can e-mail me ([email protected]) if you have any specific questions. ~Alyssa

27 hours! (one overnight) The doctor wants patients to stay overnight to ensure they can tolerate clear liquids the night of surgery, and a full liquid meal the next day (including creepy green jello ).

Hey DeAnn, My surgery was from 7:30am to 10:30am I was in recovery until 12:00 I would have gone home at 12:30 but I was too squirrelly on all the pain meds!! I had to stay and sleep it off till 5:00. I was home, in my own bed resting comfortably by 6:30pm. Starting doing laps around my house by 8:00pm, once an hour, every hour. The difference you ask is ATTITUDE!! You have to go into this with a great mind set, to get a great result, and to get a great recovery!! There is lots of help right here on this board that can get you through ANYTHING! Good luck Carolyn

I was in the hospital for 4 days but that's because I had a lot of adhesions from a prior abdominal surgery. Most either go home the same day or spend one night in the hospital. Good luck to your brother..what a nice sis you are and congrats on your weight loss. Lili

I spent one night and I needed it. Anesthesia hit me HARD. I've heard of many, many patients though that do their surgery and get out the same day. I think it's good if the doctor allows for the possibility that you'll need a night in the hospital, but some people just don't need it. jayme

I had surgery at noon and was expecting to be released the next afternoon. But I had a fever, so had to stay an extra day. Ended up getting out about 3 pm the following day...right about 52 hours all told. And let me just say, if I'd had any sense, I'd have stayed another day. Peace, Kristina, not typically a wimp

DeeDee I think overnight is the average. A lot do come home the same day and then there are some who stay several days for various reasons. I stayed two nights because I was from out of town and we wanted to be sure everything was okay. I don't mind being in the hospital so this was not a problem for me and I was glad it went this way. Wishing your Brother all the best and congrats on your great success too. Vicki in indy
