No not together

I was wondering what exactly refried beans are as it isn't something that i have ever encountered in the UK.

Also something else i'd never heard of was cranberry salsa, but it sounds like something i would really like. Has anybody got a tried and tested recipe that they would be happy to share?

VSG with
refried beans are just mashed up bean. They are not really fried. Get the Fat free ones a little cheese and some salsa and they are good.

Refried beans are just that... beans that have been cooked up and then smashed in a pan and fried with oil (traditionally lard).  You even have to look out for the ones in the can... some of them may have been refried in animal fats before being canned.  Thus the vegetarian types are uually lower in fats and calories than the regular ones.   Although nonthing taste quite as good as authentic, traditional,  homemade refried beans.. mmm.

If your taste is anything like mine then you may not like refried beans. I had never heard of them either since I am from Canada. When I moved to TX that was one of the first southern foods my hubby tried to introduce me too. I was disgusted that anyone would take leftover baked beans, mash them up and re-cook them. YUK! But hey, the southerners love them so what do I know? LOL

Hi, I am an New Mexican. Refired beans are pinto beans that have been cooked and then you mash them in a pan with a little olive oil and chile powder they are great.  Every person and state make them different.  I add a little red chile or salsa to mine or chirozo, but that would be a little to spicy for the band I think.  I hope to be able to each red and green chile after the surgery I am going to try.

  • 1 1/2 cups of fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 1/2 an apple, peeled and cored
  • Chopped serrano or jalapeno chili to taste (about a half a chili, but taste for desired heat)
  • equivilent of 4 TBLSP of Sugar, any sweetner you like
  • Zest of one orange
  • 2 Tbsp chopped fresh cilantro
  • Dash of lime or lemon juice
  • Dash of salt

1 Either grind cranberries and apple together in a grinder, or pulse in a food processor until coarsely shredded, around 10 short pulses.

2 Combine shredded cranberries, orange zest, chile, and sugar in a medium bowl. Let sit 15 minutes for the cranberries to macerate (soften in the sugar). Add cilantro, lime juice, and salt to taste.

Makes a little less than 2 cups.

I like savory/sweet together, so I would probably eat them together on a chip.

On the cranberry salsa recipe, I use mango instead of apple. Wow! The refried beans I like best are black beans. I often take them for lunch and eat them with salsa and cottage cheese.
