Hi - well I haven't "won" the battle - yet, but am fighting the battle.  I also investigated WLS and went for a surgery consult, but just wasn't ready to do it.  Am losing it on my own, albeit slowly.  I can only speak for myself - but know I don't want the surgery.  Will I succeed in the long run?  I don't know, I have failed before.  I am happy for all those who have had surgery and are living their new lives.  I have been overweight my entire life and perhaps haven't hit rock bottom?  I wish I could be of more help to you but whatever you decide I hope it works and makes you happy!

Topic: Help/Advice Please!
Hello all.  I am weeks away from RNY but am having major doubts.  I change my mind several times a day and would really like to consider the "natural" route, but years of failure at that and the promise of RNY success are almost too much too overcome.  Is there any advice out there?  Any actual success stories that can be an inspiration?

I am over 400lbs so I have a loooong way to go and just don't know if it is smart to pass up RNY and a nearly guaranteed 200lb weight loss in one year for a 3 to 5 year struggle to do the same on my own -- IF I can mange the sustained effort to do so given that I never have in the past 20 years.  Is there anyone out there on this forum that has any insight?  Anyone who has passed on WLS and won the battle?

Please help!  Thanks.

Hi everyone. I'm currently living in Columbus, MS. I too have been given the option by my Doctor to consider the WLS. My insurance will only cover the Gastric bypass. Everyone's post on here is very imformative. Skylark Orchid I would like to thank you for your post, because the WLS is not on your mind, its your body, and unless your mind is in the right place, then the WLS is void.  I was 366.6 on 12/09. By May I had lost 60 lbs.  Everyone noticed it. My clothes were hanging off me. I had to even purchase new underwear!!! My weight loss was noticed by everyone who knew me. Slowly I have began to pick the weight back up. I had an argument with a very close friend of mines. After thatI started to feel worthless.  I stopped going to the gym. I can say the month of July was when I really started eating "bad". I have come to the conclusion I am an emotional, and conpulsive overeater. I binge too. I go well for so long, lose alot of weight, then I start back eating like crazy again. I'm seriosly consider this WLS. but Im going to try this UNjury got the next month to see what happens. Thanks in advance for reading my posts.

 Make "right decisions" a goal.

Do you set goals and track your progress? It's a well-known fact that you are more likely to reach a goal if you write it down and monitor your growth.

If you've been struggling to make good choices, make "making good choices" your goal. Create a chart, and put a star or other positive symbol on the days you make good and healthy choices. By tracking your right decisions, you'll see them increase.

Action for the day: Make a "right decisions" chart. In your journal, start a list of the right decisions you make. Looking back on the challenges you have overcome will inspire you.

I think Chelly has the right idea....if a snack is planned for, then there's no guilt involved.  I swear attitude is everything with me.  My difficult time is after dinner watching TV.  I start with a bottle of water....move on to a cup of herbal tea and always plan a sweet treat (skinny cow or 60 calories SF pudding cup) for later.  I know I have it to look forward to and I'm not looking at it as a "cheat", but part of the overall plan.  Whether you're counting calories or points or just making healthy choices, try incorporating some planned snacks into your day.

I also find that protein during the day (HB egg, string cheese) keeps me satisfied more than fruit.

Glad to see you're losing again.  I think the most important thing about plateaus is that we learn from them.  I have lost 25lb since the end of April, but it has been a very slow process for the most part.  Have really been just maintaining for most of the summer, down a pound or two, but finding all the social situations and vacations challenging to say the least.

I too have come to a new peace with my body.  Been overweight all my life (age 64) and morbidly obese for most of my adult life.  I haven't consistently lost weight for four months in YEARS.  What has made the difference for me is the accountability of The Daily Weigher Thread on Low Carb Friends.  I know weighing yourself every day is discouraged by a lot of people, but believe me...I need to know that I have to post my weight every morning....it has really helped.  I make my goal to weigh less each month and it will all add up eventually.  I have given up on restrictive diets...don't do well being told I CAN'T eat certain things....deprivation leads to self sabotage and eventually a binge.  No food is excluded from my diet, but making healthier choices and using portion control....and most importantly of all, NOT BEATING MYSELF UP ABOUT MY WEIGHT ANYMORE!!

I'm wearing a couple of size smaller clothes....more selection in my closet....more energy....and feeling better about life in general.  I've spent YEARS in the "dieting" mode....trying to stick to plans, failing, throwing in the towel and feeling like I "blew it" and then eating everything in sight and experiencing all the guilt and shame that comes with it.  NO MORE!!  Life is good and I'm sure I'm a much easier person to be around.

Good luck to all of you and be kind to yourselves....baby steps is the only way to go.  As long as that scale keeps going in a downward direction, I'm one happy camper.
