I agree about mental health awareness and education of children.....add responsible parents who raise their children properly.    Your statement about shooting ranges in schools during the 50s doesn't work for me.  Different time and completely different society.

I understand why they moved them, and perhaps it was also an attempt at livening a dead board by bringing awareness to the people who would be willing to go to OT but think the sex before/after board might be filled with twisted sex maniacs?

I've lived here for 11 years since 2001 (lived in Singapore for a few in between) and have NEVER felt I needed to carry a gun.  I really don't live somewhere you see or hear guns.

My son has fallen into the "need to carry" mindset and at present has (I think 4 guns) and has his concealed carry permit - I suppose I could run to his house during the zombie apocolypse?

Stranger shootings in my county are EXTREMELY rare - you are way more likely to be shot by a family member or targetted for a reason (like the Head of Corrections) - I might have had a gun if I were in that sort of a position and who knows, maybe he did?   Doubt I'd think to take my loaded weapon to open the door to a pizza guy   just as he didn't!

Wow, that must be really scary. How awful to feel you need guns. Why would anyone want to carry a concealed gun? If it is to frighten people off, isn't that defeating the object?

do you have to be trained before you can carry a gun? Psychologically evaluated? I have read scare stories of people just being able to go and buy a gun. I assume that can't be true??

Highest 290, Banded - 248   Lowest 139 (too thin!). Comfort zone 155-165.

Happily banded since May 2006.  Regain of 28lbs 2013-14.  ALL GONE!

But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,

Problem is people get offended so easily nowadays. Plus so many people believe that if they aren't happy something MUST be changed. I know when I don't like something (like a forum topic) I don't read it, but that is common sense and it is so very uncommon today.

My friend's father is in his late 80's.  He was leaving the grocery store one morning when two young men approached him threateningly and asked if he was alone.  He pulled open his jacket, and said he had a friend with him as he pointed to his revolver.  The two probably would-be assaultants ran away.

We have concealed carry licenses in the US because it helps us to feel safer.  When everyone finally wakes up and gets their CCL, maybe criminals will be less likely to pick on someone.  Without a gun in the US we can feel like the deer during hunting season.

I do not enjoy shooting my gun.  I do enjoy knowing that it empowers me.  I know that I have been trained to carry and use it properly.  I hope I never need to use my fire insurance.  I hope I never need to use my gun, but I need both.

I can see your side on this. I don't even have a gun in my house because my wife is very against it. I just don't think what we are doing now is what is going to work. We have lots of laws just need to enforce them. I am all for a universal background check as every state is different. You know give your fingerprint and they run you on all data bases. I just believe if someone means to do harm they will find a way. The founding fathers wanted us to have guns so that the government could not be more powerful then us. You dang Brits drove us away.lol I will not lie I am not 100% sure what the answer is. I do think we need to educate much more on mental illness and signs to look for and how to best respond to people with a mental illness. I admit I could be wrong on the home invasion thing. I had read that a few times but maybe it was slanted information.

I have lived in several countries where firearms are only available to people who pass certain regulations and one where they are illegal to citizens and none of these places have the record of home invasions or gun deaths - even per capita - than the US has.   Hard to believe but not everyone who has guns has them loaded on the nightstand "just in case"   I would hate to have to live my life with that fear but then I suppose I am fortunate to live in a good neighbourhood!

I don't want to take anyone's guns (and I don't believe President Obama does either) but I would like there to be more regulation (as I believe something like 96 per cent of the population do) as to who can own them (reference your mental health wish)   There will always be stupid people who circumvent this requirement though, (such as the Sandy Hill mother) but I don't believe we should not legislate because of stupid people.

All of this discussion is moot anyway, because as we well know the NRA has bought Congress, so any change is probably never going to happen - we, as a nation, are more about the rights of perpetrators or potential perpetrators than the rights of victims or potential victims ...   Oh, and that kid who stabbed 20 odd others?  None of them died - maybe if he had bought his AR15, the result would have been different?

You realize that in the 50's they had shooting ranges in schools and gun shooting clubs? I don't think they eliminated them until the 80's. Yet you did not see school shootings. Why is that? I think it is because kids were taught to respect them and what they could do. One child recently used kitchen knives. The Boston marathon was bombs. The problem is a mental health problem in this country. You can make them illegal all you want but if somebody wishes to do harm to others they will. Also in countries with guns being illegal they have more cases of home invasions while the people are home. I am all for background checks but more laws will not stop any problems instead let's educate children and work on helping the mental health of them.

I don't hate guns at all but I also don't hate sex - I know there is a sex board, but it's just about dead - so it's a good way to kill a lively thread!!   Perhaps Member Services could open a new guns forum or suggest a private group where people can compare the size and calibre of their weapons.  I'd be up for joining!

I'm sure there are people who find both topics offensive, but I think if one is moved to an ADULT forum then they both need to be, (I believe this forum is not tagged as adult!).
