OT: Border crossing with child and 1 parent

Do I need anything besides a birth certificate or passport to bring Alex across the border without my husband in the car too.  I heard that you need a notarized letter from the other parent given permission?  Has anyone done this? 

I do this frequently!  I just took all 4 of my boys over to my last checkup in Ann Arbour.  The guy looked at each passport and child and asked who was who.  Sometimes they will ask them who I am.
When they were all younger we would write our own letters to bring with us with the other parent signing the letter to say we could take the child and how long they were going for.  I figure if I get stopped now they can call him on the phone to ask if he knows we are crossing the border.  I would not pay to have it notarized.

A few months ago I crossed the boarder with my dad and his friend and his friends 14-year-old daughter.  We had a notorized letter from a lawyer saying that we had permission from Kelsey's mom to take her across the boarder and we were asked for it both ways!

You need a passport now. A birth certificate will not get you in or out of the country any more.
I work for the Federal Government. Most Service Canada Centres are now open on Saturdays to 2pm. Most of the offices can now take your passport application so you don't have to go to Citizenship and Immigration, Passport offices, any more.

 Actually, a child under 16 does NOT require a passport yet when travelling land/sea across the Canada/US border, YET.  However, Alex has a passport already.

My question was more directed at if I needed a notarized letter.  Thanks though!  :)

I never had any of my letters notorized, I did have them signed/witnesses by someone else but never notarized.

When I take Aaliyah or my stepson across for basketball tournaments I print off the template from the border authroities website and we sign it...I never had it notorized.

Google - travel with child letter and the federal website should pop up.The template is on there.

I noticed that you have an Aaliyah in your household?  I have a 2 year old Aaliyah.  Do you get grief on the spelling you chose?  I hear about it all the time from extended family, I finally told them to stop.  Now I assume that they talk about it when my back is turned.

lol I actually didnt choose the name, her biological mom did but yes, I get it all the time and people spell it wrong in emails or texts just to prove their point that the spelling is too difficult.  I think its cute so tough beans to them ;p
