Skipping a family function due to surgery.

Has anyone ever done this????? Tomorrow is my FIL b-day and everyone decided we would go out to dinner. Fine with me I can always find something I can eat or I just share with hubby.  Well we just got a call from my SIL and dinner will be at Manderin.  I was so upset.  I just can't see spending all that money on a buffet that I can't eat. Also I LOVE the Manderin and am afraid that the temptation will be more than I can handle.  I told hubby to take the kids and go with out me.  His parents know about my surgery so I am sure they will understand. Hubby feels bad and says we will all stay home but I told him not to worry and just go.  I feel kinda of guilty but as someone told me it is my turn to start looking after me.

Just wanted to add that my inlaws are visiting this weekend and I did make my FIL a birthday dinner. SO we are all good there.

Am I doing the right thing??? Wondering what others have done in this situation??

IMO, I think you should still go.  It's not about the dinner, its about being with family for a birthday party.  Don't take this the wrong way.. but this dinner isn't about you or your surgery.  Not going just because you think it's a waste of money or you'll be tempted to eat something you shouldn't seems pretty selfish.

i personally would still go, and just pick off my husbands plate the things i can eat, or eat ahead so you are still part of the function and drink your protein shake or water or whatever liquid your drinking.   I love Manderin also but they also have lots of things you can eat. Its about being part of the family birthday function not the food
In the beginning there was the word. The word was Jah. The word is in I, Jah is in I. I make what is good, better, and what is better, best. I follow this in every aspect of life.

I would go...spend the cash, since it is your FIL's bday.  A friend of mine that had RNY goes to the Mandarin all of the time.  She discreetly tells the waiter that she had surgery and that she can only eat a very small amount, and they only charge her for a kids plate.  Enjoy the time with your family.

Dinner plans were just thrown together this afternoon.  We are celebrating FIL birthday here tonight as that was the original plans. So it is not as if we are not celebrating his birthday as a family because we are.

I guess I will just wait to see what tomorrow brings.

Most buffet places also have a menu you can order from if you don't want the buffet, so just ordering a bowl of wonton soup or something might make it easier.

What about phoning ahead, and asking them what they do with people who physically can't eat the buffet??  I did this with Tuckers Market for my mom's birthday, and they charged me the childs rate!!  It worked out great....Patti K.

Well I am going to be the black sheep here I guess.  I can totally understand how you feel and I probably wouldn't go.  I don't know of ANYTHING at the Manderin that would be OK to eat.  Also if you already had them over for dinner and did that whole thing I think you are good. It isn't like you are using the surgery as an excuse because you don't want to go because you don't like them or something like that. I know how it feels to go and guess what it wasn't worth it.  I ended up eating something that I thought would be ok.. Boy I was sick as a DOG.  So my vote is do what makes YOU comfortable.  If you don't want to go then don't.  But if you really would like to go then do.

JMO that is the way I feel.  And guess what this time is about YOU.  Sorry I hope this helps and doesn't make things worse on you.
