"Optifast Has a Hormone or Drug In It That Drains Fat Out Of Your Liver
Well Hello there fellow R.N.,
I am going to ask of you to stop this debate and really do a little research of your own, this is out of control. If you would go to scholarly Google and type in www.optifast.ca click on the box the list of ingredients are there and YES!!!! there is Linolec Acid, it is the fourth and fifth ingredient down from the top.
Real Nurses generally don't lie about these things. All about the oath...this conversation did not start out as a conversation about medical knowledge or advice...it was done under novice terms, until I was attacked for my incite...and I was only TRYING TO HELP.
Since I was miss quoted, I had to defend myself and my "..OPINION".....I was in fact asking her to not strongly promote low Carb diet as the best way of reducing fat around the liver and over all BMI to please check with her NUT and/or surgeon, which was also advicing everyone else to do the same. I am not giving advice i am making people aware of the need to do research and ask questions from the proper authorites.....B/c many surgery's have canceled surgeries b/c they didn't remove enough fat from the liver.....yes, of course the diet is the key factor but the dietary supplement does help out a lot....that is why it is in there......You totally omitted it.... WHAT BOX ARE YOU LOOKING AT? Left hand side list or nutrients per serving LInolec Acid 2.0, Lenolenic Acid.5
Why!
...I doubt whether you are a nurse, don't preach about behaviour, you have just embassassed the nursing profession by doing that on this site, rather than once again contacting me personally ,that is unprofessional!..
There is a lot of evidence and yes there are people that say it does not work, in any controversial supplement or drug there is always controversy OVER RESEARCH AND STUDIES....Ulcers of the stomach were cured by a doctor that had to drink the bacteria and to reproduce an particular ulcer in his own stomach..named H-pylori...which is now cure-able with antibiotics and gastric acid pump blockers . His research was laughed at .
Before I would come to a thesis regarding the validity of the research out there , I would have to study this for quite some time...and I don't have that time...I know what I was told by a pharmacist and through what research I did that satisfied me....with 17 years experience and a degree in Science and Biology...it is my OPINION and MY body...I felt with the Diabetes and Insulin it was my best route and any extra help was appreciated....this isn't a debate....anyone that would like further info can easily research it.....I hope you did a full case study before you debunked the research that is available from Dr.Peter Goldfarb on the optifast site....I think it is time to report this b/c I am sick of it.....I will not come on this site again...
Wow! People do your own research do not listen to people like that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Since you can't or won't back up your assertion, by posting a link, that Opitfast has super seeckrit magic ingredients to melt fat off your liver, I am left with the strong feeling that there is no evidence.
As for not asking to back up your assertions in public vs private- you posted it on the board. Members have the right to know that what you said, is not supported by facts, research or my Aunt Fanny. The nursing profession is strong, it will only get weak if nurses are allowed to spread opinion as fact. When asked to support your statements you exploited your status as a nurse and your 4 year undergrad science degree. " I am very qualified to give advice I went to York University for 4 years."
I went to the Nestle site- they are the people who make this- the stuff that is given in the Ontario Bariatric program has no Lineolic acid.
http://www.nutrition.nestle.ca/en/our_products/weightloss/Optifast_900
Not asking you to publish a thesis- just back up your statements. Btw Lineolic Acid is an essential fatty acid, not a drug, not a hormone.
Just in case you forgot what you posted:
"Try to get the optifast, and/or call your surgeon, he can give you some but also realize that there is a hormone and drug in the optifast that helps to drain fat from the liver and around the heart. They also use this drugs and diet for heart patients before they have Cardiac by-pass." Tracy
I've been a nurse for over 30 years. Post-grad Masters education, plus more recent RNAO Best Practice Fellowships, I don't need to prove to anyone other than my employer and the patients I care for that I am a Registered Nurse.

Good Post Louise, OP is the one who made it about credentials. The nursing profession has many faces.

HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT IRON AND/OR http://theironmaiden.ca/
No it is not all about credentials...but it helps.I have reponded to this women and we ar both lookin at two differnet sourses of information why it is posted differently I do not know all I have tried to do is help one person out I screwed up and there is a giant mob mentality going on here .........it is not a compition......this a form to help people and I am very very upset by it al...you people do not even know me ...mob mentality go with the flow www.optifast.ca look on the left side of the box! and leave me alone
For goodness sakes ....How old are you? I never said it was Super seeckritt magic.....
It has been stated by some researcher the dietary supplement Conjugated lenolec Acid/ Lenolenic Acid may displace fat from the liver and heart area in humans as it is proven in animals i.e. Pigs and is being used as a way to produce lean muscle in animals
....Agriculture Canada is looking into the use in animals for the production of leaner meats, as there findins where positive....it is on the Agricultural Canada, Government web site,
I don't have time to back up what you ask...it would take up a lot of time. Which I have little and I am still trying to recover from my surgery and know my B/P is sky high and my stomach hurts and I am stressed out... gee thanks....but yes, lets keep it going....
We are obviously looking at two different web site and two different sets of info but I happened to have a box and it is the same box that is on www.opitfast.ca, it is what I took and it had the dietary supplement in it...and it does have it listed,
BUT it is not listed on the Nestle site, I totally agree with why you are stating what you are stating..... I just checked there...so, I can see the confusion. It can't be the same one my surgeon gave me then.
To be truly informed you need to still at-least look at where my info is coming from and it is only part of my research...if you look on the box the non medical ingredients are listed on the right, side, the ingredients per serving are listed under nutritional ingredients on the left side of the box per 340ml....it is the 4 and fifth ingredient down from the top....the rational maybe that because it is a dietary supplement the dont list it with the ingredients just the active ingredients on the left....I don't know why they do this, I am just stating what i found out I have giving you the web site where I found it , check it out...and yes , they do use this diet for pre op cardiac pt's suspicously because they have found it helps to remove fat from the heart area, its all new reseach but it is promising! ????
When I first stated is it a drug or hormone i just couldn't think straight due to drugs I was on being 5 days post-op and I was not on this website at that time speaking as a nurse...therefore, I was truly just reaching for a proper name and I corrected myself a.s.a.p. I wasn't sure if it was a drug or hormone which proves to you I wasn't thinking totally straight, It is one of many essential fatty acid and is used as a natural dietary supplement in optifast, I beleive that if you have something professional to say to another nurse, it should be spoken in private first, to work out any misinterpretations or miss communication...so we can stand together and correct and inform the public properly rather than ranting on a "fellow Nurse" on a public form... (but then again lateral violence in nursing is out of control)...Yes, this is where we would publish our co-findings with acurate information...but you did not give me that chance.
Please, go to the site i suggested first, before you come back with more insults....it has it listed and that is a fact...so they' re misinformation out there, which should cause you to want to be 100% sure about what you are saying....b/c you would then be misinforming the public..... go to where I suggested...then you will see where I am coming from. This has become nothing short of mob mentality...I have removed my file and sent a letter to the editor...good day!

I went to the site you linked to. It appears to be a doctor's web page- he is selling Optifast massively overpriced to gullible folks who think that this will make them slim. Plugging Optifast into Google Scholar does not bring up a site with a list of ingredients.
What Ag Canada is doing, has nothing to with people pre-op WLS.
As for you being post-op. By 8 days post-op, I was back at work caring for sick people. Also dealing with a nasty wound infection.
My initial response to your post was not as a nurse. When you raised the 'fact' that you are a nurse, I then advised you provide evidence to support this assertion re lineolic acid, and suggested that being a nurse carries an extra burden to be accurate when sharing info with others. Correcting you on a public forum is not unprofessional. It may be embarrassing to you, but in your place I would have had the balls to either back it up with evidence or gracefully say, Hey I was wrong. Sorry. But no, you keep on pushing this faux science, misleading people. Then making excuses for not giving the evidence. Put on your big girl panties and grow up.
BTW this site has spell check, use it.

Louise...you absolutely rock!
See...this was the whole intention of my original post in the first place. Medical professionals who work in the bariatrics and obesity field should be knowledgeable in their fields. There are some gems, however few and far between. As we've seen from this example, 'faux information' can be very harmful. I did not know this person was a nurse...but wow...this really proves my point.
BTW...what exactly is there to report? How were you wronged? Embarrassed does not = wronged or disrespected. You were the only person who was in fact disrespectful.
In fact...perhaps you should be reported as a medical professional pushing faux science. You've had every opportunity to correct yourself and all you give are excuses.
I'm 8 days out and have been working for several days already and my faculties seem to be sharper than ever! NO excuse.
