From what im hearing, it seems that while on optifast you are supposed to have decaf, well i have looked my papers over and over and it does not specify that it has to be decaf, it just says calorie free clear fluids.  Im kinda worried and upset because i have just finished my first week of optifast and have been following it to a T but i was drinking reg coffee, so my question is this   Did I mess up bad, or whats the reasoning behind this?  Any input would help.   Thanks    Char

I didn't go through Ontario but I believe that the reasoning is to get you off caffeine so that post op you won't go into withdrawl. I'd cut it out now. I was allowed caffeine before surgery so I am pretty sure that's the reasoning - more of a habit than a medical one.  I wouldn't sweat it personally but I'd get off the octane now and make it easier on yourself for the long run.

Definitely go right down to zero on the caffeine so you don't have those nasty withdrawal headaches - I started by mixing half decaf and half regular to start, and then went to decaf. I mixed my optifast with cold decaf and it was one of the best "recipes" for me. I also got those VIA decaf instant coffees from Starbucks to use with optifast.

Good luck!

I drank caffeine!   Mind you I cut back on coffee due to it not tasting as good without sugar and cream but I drank black coffee.  Everything went well with me!

Have a great day!

It is kinda ironic.....cause once you are able to eat or have fluids in the hospital, the beverage they give you is coffee.  Anyway, you should be fine.  Good luck.

I detoxed gradually from caffeine by starting with half decaf for a few days then a quarter for another few days and never did get the headaches or withdrawals.  I started back up the same way (but opposite) as I gradually added back a little more caffeine at a time.  I stuck at 1/3 caffeine, 2/3 rds decaf as it works well for me.  I was never told to cut it out so I'm sure you have done no harm whatsoever.

Good luck on your journey.

Every surgeon seems to have different rules.  I drank coffee the whole time I was on Optifast and started it up again the day after surgery. I drink mine black so it was never an issue for me but I specifically asked if we had to go decaf and was told we didn't have to. If your surgeon doesn't specify to go decaf then no need to give it up IMO.

I have been told, no caf because it irriates the lining of the stomach and that some surgeons may see this and not follow through. I would cut it out of your diet asap and maybe call your surgeons office just to double check. I hope all goes well for yoU!
