Anyone with a 55+ BMI have long term success with RNY?

Ever since I started researching WLS, I have had my mind set on the DS. But with the DS being nearly impossible to get OHIP to cover, and no means for self-pay, I'm left with the RNY.

I need to know if anyone has had RNY success with a very high BMI (preferably would like to hear from people who started out over 400 lbs). Were you able to lose all excess weight and keep it off? How long did it take to get to goal? Did you have any problems after surgery? Do you regret getting the RNY instead of a different procedure?

I'm so scared it won't work for me. That I have too much weight to lose and the tool will stop working for me before I get it all off. Or, god forbid, regain it all :(

So good or bad, I'd like to hear your experiences with RNY with a very large amount of weight that you had to lose.

Hi

I started at 510 pounds and lost 100 pounds four months before the surgery on liquid protein shakes. I had the RNY in May 2008 I have lost 220 since for a total of 320 pounds since Jan. 2008.  I have maintained the weight loss since then.  I have found it fairly easy.  I would still like
to maybe lose another 20 pounds but with excess skin and such I might be too skinny I am 5'9  LOL never thought I'd say that about myself.  I find it fairly easy to maintain.

I started with a bmi of 61.3, had my surgery in October 2007 and got down to my lowest of 142 lbs which according to everyone I looked awful.  I've had plastics done, arm lift & TT tuck and do not regret it for one minute, just which I would have known about the surgery years earlier.
My life has complety changed, ended up with a huge promotion at work since I finally had to confidence to stand up for myself and earned at $17,000 raise, met a great guy who I refer to as my yummy firefighter boyfriend, it'll be two years next month that we met.  I've kept most of my weight off, I've gained a bit back and currently I'm at a bmi of 30.1.
I've had a few issues while losing weight with fainting then had complications during my arm lift but I'd do it all again in a heartbeat!

WOW!  Sandy...that is incredible!  Congrats on such great success!

I havent had surgery yet but at 350lbs, my BMI is 56.  I have those same fears...the what ifs...

No matter what surgery you choose...VSG, RNY, or DS...remember...it's a tool and you [we] have to work everyday to make sure it works for us.

Hi
I didn't have a BMI of 55 but it was a solid 52.  Given I am 5'5 and was 318 lbs. when started on Sept 2.  Did Optifast and lost 18 lbs in 3 weeks, followed by my surgery on Sept 21.

Since then, I have lost 103 lbs....and just bought my first pair of size 14 (was a 24).

It is a tool, and not a magic wand.  I am at the gym 4 times a week and watch what I eat.  I am not strict, strict about carbs (meaning I eat them, just not alot).  I also have the occassional treat...if I can handle it.

Ultimately don't make the decision based on food choices as everyone is different.  I can tell you that life is better and I am so happy I did this.  Looking forward to another 45 lb weight loss..

Good luck.

No RnY here but I had VSG and had a BMI in the 55 range (I always thought my BMI was 53-54 but it turns out I'm not as tall as I once was and if I use the correct height, my starting BMI was indeed 55).

I am 2 yrs out and about 25 lbs from the surgeon's goal. I am at my goal and maintaining fairly easily (have been this weight give or take 5-7 lbs since July 2010).

So IMHO, it doesn't matter which surgery - if you are willing to make the changes necessary to your long term success, both with your eating habits and dealing with WHY you are overweight to begin with - you will/can succeed and keep it off.

Best of luck to you!

These successes are wonderful and reassuring to hear.  I'm 5'4", 343lbs, bmi of 58.  I've been really concerned about not being able to have the DS and worried about how I will do with the RNY.

Thank you to the OP for posting and to those *****sponded.
