Knees worse after surgery

Hey Kimmers....

Just wanted to give you my 2 cents worth.  I believe that when we are gaining weight very gradually over the years our bodies slowly shift and reposition as it seeks to be able to handle the excess weight.  Our bodies get used to being positioned that way.  After surgery as we are very rapidly losing weight our bodies are once again shifting and repositioning.  I believe that because it is all happening so quickly it can be very painful as our bodies are not slowly adapting to our new shape/size....but rapidly doing so.  I know that for myself there were different time periods in the first year where I had lost big chucks rapidly that I would have all kinds of aches but as I kinda settled down and maintained a more steady weight loss that the aches slowed down as well.

There may be a more specific answer or diagnosis from your doctorregarding you specifically but I know that the achy hips, knees, and lower back were things that I struggled with as I reshaped.

That's just my little experience!  Thought I'd share!  Miss you and can't wait to see you!

Yep, sounds familiar.

My knee pain (similar to what a had when I was more active several yrs ago) came back to haunt me.
My physiotherapist assessed that the muscles closests to my knees were very tight.  Perhaps I was using them more via exercise and overall more rapid walking rate-movement rate due to carrying less weight.

Once I did some more specific types of stretching the pain went down a lot.

I do have juvenile RA, so I do have the joint pain.  But stretching really helps me.

My Dr also recommended Omega 3 instead of Glucosamine.
I would talk to a pharmacist re: Glucosamine being an NSAID.. it may have some similarities but chemically speaking with regards to absorbtion and side effects, I'm not so certain that the nurse is 100% accurate on that.

I had terrible foot pain for the first few months, and we suspcect that it may the loss of tissued that you described.  OUCH OUCH OUCH. I am so glad that stopped.  I was so discouraged.

Good luck!

My knee has been KILLING me this past week!!! I thought for sure with the weight loss the pain would lessen, but quite contrary, it has gotten worse.
I am so relieved to hear this is not uncommon as well as the reasons why this may be happening.
Thank you for posting such a great post!  :)

if you have insurance coverage through your work, you may want to look into orthotics for your shoes. When i've had painful knees in the past, my orthotics have corrected that. They put my feet in better position,w hich translates into less pain in my knees and hips, etc.

Back and lower body pain is really common with rapid weight loss.  Your joints are all being realigned.  A really heavy person walks with their legs splayed, simply because with fat thighs your joints are pushed apart & out of alignment.  A physiotherapist should be able to give you strengthening exercises that will help.
(xraying 2 ladies that had hip and knee pain after WLS is how I found out about WLS)

I have had some issues with my hips.  My GP said it was busitis and I have been having physio for it  for about 3 months and it seems to be helping.  I have a job where I am on my feet all day which doesn't help either.  The sudden shift of weight on joints the physiotherapist told me could be part of my problem.  Don't be too discouraged.  You have overcome a great deal and I hold out hope that over time my hips will improve.  So many other health issues have improved.

Glucosamine is not an nsaid.  It is definetly worth a try.  Just remember you have to be on it long term to see results.  I take osteo-biflex which has glucosamine and chondiritin.  It is helping I think....

Now you have me concerned about Glucosamine. I'm taking it daily right now, but never mentioned it to my care team. I don't think it is an NSAID (see http://igennus-hn.com/omega-3-glucosamine-offers-safe-alternative-to-nsaid-arthritis-treatment/ for example) but maybe it has similar ill effects? I might give them a call on Monday to be sure.

The last time I had rapid massive weight loss (85 lbs on South Beach in 95) I had this problem. I found aquafit helped a lot, so this time around I was in the pool as soon as my doctor cleared me. I now do 1-4 times a week and I haven't had much pain despite the fact that I have lost more weight and my joints were worse off than they were in 95.

Fat is a part of subcutaneous tissue, but in this case, he's probably more concerned with the bursae (the synovial cavities that cushion the joints) See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knee_bursae .

 HI,

My aunt took Glucosime, she said it works but takes 6 weeks to 3 months to kick in.

I had a sore back and hips for months after surgery.  I talked with my doctor and she stated that it could be because i had lost so much weight so fast that i was "carrying" myself differently and using different muscles in different ways.

I think your body is going through a huge readjustment,  this might be part of it.

I don't think adding vitamin c and glucosimine would hurt,

Good luck,

Catnip
