What is the hardest time of the day for you to stave off the munchies?
I have been finding lately that i am hungry when I get home from work at about 5:00 (as I probably should be), but as I am making dinner for the fam. I have to fight very hard not to snack on things. It is driving me CRAZY. Sometimes my will-power wins, and sometimes it doesn't. When I do give in and snack, then I am not hungry for dinner, and I skip it. BAD- I know. If I don't eat dinner, then I just down a protein shake in it's place. I am thinking maybe I should make my protein shake at work before I leave and drink it as I drive home so that I am not famished when I get there. I also think that maybe I should be preparing meals the night before so that I just have to heat it up. I used to do this simply because the kids are always famished by 5:30 when I usually start making dinner. I have fallen out of the habit, but I think it is about time to start again.
What about you. What is the hardest time of the day for you?

That used to be my bad time too Marny - as soon as I got home from work, I wanted food! I started having a snack at my desk (usually fruit or a Nutrigrain bar) at about 4:30 (I got off work at 5:00) & that helped take the edge off my hunger. I also used a lot of quick-fix meals like "Skillet Sensations" although, like most processed foods, there's a lot of sodium in them. My best solution was to put something in the slow-cooker in the morning before I left for work.
Now, my worst time for snacking seems to be between 9 & midnight, so I go to the kitchen and make myself a cup of decaf tea.

Your strategies of having a shake on your way home and pre-making dinner are great. For me it's after work til bed. I try to have a dense protein snack ready for when I get home. I use turkey pepperettes because they are easy to grab and taste great with roasted red pepper hummus. I need some new ideas though because that gets boring.

Why don't you try planning more meals with a slow cooker. That way supper is ready when you get home, more time with the family, and only one pot to clean. I know the last thing I feel like doing after working all day is cooking so anything to make the time shorter. That way you wont feel the urge to snack right when you get home.
Making dinner is brutal, you're right. And then night time is awful. I try to go to bed early - and bring Joe with me.
