Almond Breeze (almond milk)

I have used the unsweetened chocolate almond milk in some of my protein drinks recently. I add one pouch of stevia to the unsweetened because it doesn't have the rich flavour of the sweetened (which is 20g or so more carbs per cup).
Yesterday I decided to do a blind taste test and compared Almond Breeze unsweetened chocolate with WestSoy Soy Slender no sugar added chocoate in my chocolate protein drink. My husband and I agreed that the soy beverage had a superior taste (which surprised me because I didn't think I liked soy drinks).
I just looked up the nutritional info...
The unsweetened chocolate soy drink has 70 calories per cup, 3g fat, 5g carbs (but 4g fibre so 1g net carb if you count that way) and 7g of protein ($3.99 at the low carb grocery for about 1L)
The unsweetened chocolate almond drink has 45 calories per cup, 3.5g fat, 3g carbs (but 2g fibre so 1g net carb if you count that way) and 2g of protein ($3.99 at the low carb grocery for about 1L - I haven't found the unsweetened in any mainstream stores)
A typical (non-chocolate) skim milk has 80 calories per cup, 0g fat, 12g carbs (0g fibre) and 9g of protein (about $2.00 per 1L at most grocery stores)
After seeing the numbers side by side, I find it hard to justify regularly paying 50-100% more for just a few fewer carbs, especially when you also get less protein. I would however buy it again to have on hand for when I want an occassional chocolately treat.
I'll be doing the same taste test with the vanilla in the next few days. (How boring is my life?)

Thank you soooo much! I can't wait to hear about the vanilla. You are doing EXACTLY what I would do with the taste tests! I love soy milk, but wasn't aware you could get it unsweetened and low carb!!! Are you talking about the low carb grocer in Markham? I'm in downtown Toronto and I'm trying to find a low carb grocer downtown that sells the unsweetened alternative milks, but I will probably rent a car and head up to Markham just before surgery and stock up.

I am referring to the Low Carb Grocery in Markham. I did an in-person visit the first time and now order online because their shipping is so inexpensive.
They delivered an order last week. I didn't get to the door when it arrived so they left the box next door. When I went to pick it up I couldn't believe how heavy the box was. I could hardly carry it and the shipping costs was $2.45 (they discount shipping when you order over $100 if I remember correctly).

I drink Almond Breeze all the time. I buy the 40 calorie, no sugar added variety and love it. I am a vegetarian moving toward veganism and really don't want to drink cow's milk anymore. Almond Breeze makes 60 calorie and 90 calorie varieties also with added sugar in them. I make protein shakes everyday and use Almond Breeze always.
Almond Breeze is available at the Bulk Barn if you have one near you, and I have found that it is cheapest there. It's also at Superstore and Shoppers, but at Shoppers it is 2.00 more
I always have several containers on hand. I love it.

PS I have had breast cancer and was told to stay away from soy due to the estrogen.

I love the Almond Breeze and drink it instead of cows milk. I don't believe that cows milk was intended for humans. The Almond Breeze sugar free is really good, if you find it not sweet enough add one splenda...ummmm

Milk allergies are actually highest in cultures where people do not widely drink milk, take China for example. Exposure usually leads to a decrease in allergies, as is thought to be the case with exposing kids to peanuts much earlier now than used to be recommended (and during pregnancy too), and a decrease in allergies has been noted because of it. There is all kinds of stuff that is unnatural - cooked meat for one, we're the only animals that do that too! But milk feeds a nutritional need (calcium) that most people otherwise wouldn't fulfill and would suffer health consequences later in life due to it. Consuming milk is thought to be one factor in our much longer life spans because we now have stronger bones to a much later age. If you're not consuming dairy products, just make sure you're getting your calcium some other way.
