Dear Hair.....
This is my big fear too, as I don't have much to begin with. I used to have thick, thick hair, and lost a tonne of it as well as my curls. Mine is really thin at the back and I can see my scalp :-( I haven't lost any yet, but i'm only 11 weeks out. Scared!!!
Surgery March 23/2011. Completed three full marathons and two half marathons, two half Ironman distances. Completed my first Full Ironman distance (4 km swim, 180 km bike, 42.2 km (full marathon) run) in Muskoka August 30/2015. Next Ironman Lake Placid July 23/2017!

My mom wore wigs for the last ten years of her life, and I went shopping with her for them.
At first, she went with a colour and cut quite "young", compared to her normal mousy style. She felt better wearing it, but got so many comments that she decided to go back and get another, closer to her own style/colour. (She was never comfortable with any comment on her apeparance.)
About the being hot underneath - yes, you're absolutely right Marnie, she sweated a lot.
Despite careful washing as per instructions for human hair wigs she developed a mild fungal infection right at her nape, where it was always moist from the perspiration.
It DID clear up with powder.
But I just wanted to warn you about that.
(Of course, she wore it for years, not a few months like you would.)

Hi there,
I know what your going through. I've been suffering from thinning hair for years now due to POD (polycystic ovary disease) and was anxious to have surgery because my weight was the problem for POD which in turn caused me to loose my hair. I was more than just a little crushed when I discovered that thining hair is a side effect of WLS. Just had my sx this past March 2011.
I've been rockin wigs now for about 2 years, i love waking up in the am and picking which one to wear, long, short, brunette, red head, dark brown.... but I am still hoping that my hair will grow back after everything settles down. I do miss washing and blowdrying, dying and not having to worry if someone will tug too hard lol

Hi Marny,
This was a very humourous read, thanks for that.
I have recently been doing some research on Bariatric related anemia, and recently read an article that hair loss is also a function of low iron stores (aka ferritin levels). Specifically hair regeneration requires a minimum ferritin level of 40. What makes this even more interesting is that a ferritin level as low as 20 is considered normal.
So the take home point of this reply is that in addition to an adequate protein intake you may need an iron supplement. Iron Supplement of choice for post WLS patients is a heme iron such as Proferrin or a poly saccharide iron such as FeraMAX.
As those who have attended my presentation on Bariatric Related Anemias will attest I think that IRON salts (ferrous sulfate, ferrous gluconate, ferrous fumarate) are the equivalent of the devil.

HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT IRON AND/OR http://theironmaiden.ca/
I am notoriously low on iron and always have been. My mom has thalocymia (sp?) and so does my brother. I have tested negative for this though. As per my nutritionist's instructions I take 3 ferrous gluconate daily. Can you explain to me why you are opposed to them? Is there something there that I should be informed of?
Thanks.
Thanks.
