Carbs and Calories OH MY the confusion
To add something else, it's about protein first. :) That's what you should be eating on your plate first and leaving any carbs to the last bite or two for the most part.
You basically don't want to be eating oatmeal or mash potatoes as the bulk of every meal three times a day.
The thing is that many people will eat too many carbs because they go down easy. Crackers, toast, popcorn, pretzels etc go down REALLY easy for most people. It's often protein that we have to struggle with - eggs, meat, chicken, fish etc. Primarily you want to have mostly proteins and veggies, and yes perhaps a little carbs at a snack or as the small part of the meal.
You don't want your meals to become carb dominate. That's when we get into trouble with too many carbs. A little here and there (especially of the good, unprocessed carbs and whole grains) are needed for function but often we get off track and eat too much of these things (think: chips, cookies, cakes and all that yummy processed junkfood!).
And watch too because even though a product may "seem" healthy, it doesn't mean it is --- read the labels. For instance, everyone buys multigrain cheerios thinking they are going to be really good for you when, instead they are covered in sugar. The dietician said that the plain cheerios are better than the multigrain to hubby when he had his preop diet analyzed.

Great point Dawn!
I often read of people "not tolerating" meat, while having no problem with the "carb" foods. I honestly think that is just a misunderstanding of how their new stomach works! Meet doesn't go down nearly as well for me as the carbs - but that's a GOOD THING! It really keeps my portions under control!

When I met the dietician she told me very small amounts of carbs are important...not just beans, etc... Some whole grains, quineo (spelt wrong..lol) are fine and needed but very small. PROTEIN, PROTEIN, PROTEIN....and veggies.
Good luck. Can't wait to hear all about your successes after surgery.

Thanks again everyone for all your information. I understand that we need proteins first. My angel Barb drilled it in my head when we spoke on the phone. She is a great person and gave me great information. I was just confused on eating no carbs and then being told we need some carbs well not the bad ones but the good carbs. I am clear now on this
. I have googled as per Karen the good and bad carbs and I have a list as well.
