if you have trouble finding a doctor to refer you, you can go to a walk in clinic, see a physician or a nurse practitioner. Good luck, in what ever you decide, Brenda.

Welcome to the forum, Brenda :)

I'm a successful former Dr. Levy patient!  We worked on my weight loss and eating behaviours for quite some time - fixed my head/food issues, but not my body issues.   He had absolutely no problem at ALL referring me for surgery 5 1/2 years ago - in fact he encouraged it. :)  Discuss it with him and let him know you would like a referral.

Hi Brenda, welcome.

I had surgery last year Sept 22 when I was 42.
My only complication was very bad constipation which I now have under control. The first initial period as Monica said is rough. You have to feed your new stomach like a new baby for a while. The baby will tell you if it is ready for certain foods and it will tell you what it likes and doesn't like.
Now my every day life is pretty normal. I remember before surgery having watched a few talk shows on RNY (prob. OPRAH) and thinking, "what if I transfer my addiction and become an alcoholic or a sex addict?" That seems pretty funny to me now. I was expecting to feel more discomfort and nausea than I have. I vomited once the first time I ate crackers because I sat down with the box and ate way too many (slider food) and my stomach let me know. The reality is I can eat anything now. I don't know if that is good or bad! I do have some discomfort when I eat rice which is not a recommended food anyway. (slap me).
The work you put into losing weight since surgery is easier than before. At least the first year anyway. The scale dropped so drastically that I was a little worried if this was healthy or not. It's like a dream.. I must say though that it does slow down. It makes sense right? You can't lose 15 lbs in a week forever! My weight has been fluctuating for well over a month now. It gets easier to slide back into eating crappy foods again. Once you open the 'box' it's hard to shut it again. I choose to record the amount of fluids I drink and the amount of protein. Every centre does things a little differently.

This was the best decision I have ever made. I was a size 22-24 and now I'm in 14 jeans. There are a million little things to celebrate. I feel beautiful. I am not ashamed to go out. I feel like I have my life back.
All the best in your decisions.

Your fears are not uncommon, I think everyone has them before making the decision.

Get into the program and research while you are waiting,  you can always change your mind. But once you've made it up, you'll want it done right away and the wait can be as long as a year, longer in some cases.

I turned 50 last year after having my surgery, wish i had of done it 10 years ago. I've had no complications, no hair loss, nothing. Not everyone has complications, but from what I've read, they'd still do it all over again.

I am so happy with how I feel. I can wear whatever I want and don't feel like an elephant. I'm not embarassed to meet to new people. I exercise more becuase I want to not because I should or have to. and it's more fun than exercise. I'm living life to the fullest.

i just booked a cruise monday night and am so excited to go away for the first time in my life while I'm "Normal" looking.

I love to dress up now.

I can eat whatever I want (within reason), I choose not to eat things I used to because of how they make me feel but if i really really wanted something bad for me, i'd have a bite and leave it at that. I don't crave the bad stuff anymore. Quiet smoking, drinking pop and eating junk. My skin looks softer and is smoother and people comment on it so the vitamins and water (which I never took before) are working.

I no longer have sore knees, high cholesterol and chronic back pain or swollen feet and ankles.

I hit goal shortly after my one year anniversary and have been able to maintain, which I've never done before. This tool I was given has changed my life, I'd never go back to the old me again.

Like I said, do your research and decide if this is what's right for you, it has to be your decision. For me, I'm finally loving me.
