What is covered?
No - get the referral in through the Bariatric Registry first (it's online) and get the ball rolling.

Hello there and welcome, as it is my understanding you don't get to pick your surgeon or centre...your GP sends a referral to the central registry and based on your postal code it's then decided what centre you will go through...also as far as choosing VSG or RNY as both are covered through OHIP your surgeon will decide what procedure is best for you.....VSG is only done because it would not be safe or feasible to perform a RNY. I am still pre-op however I have been on this board for awhile reading and researching everyday. If there is anything i have missed I'm sure you could ask a VET here or they will chime in. All the best to you on this exciting journey and whatever decision you chose.

Well, I asked my GP initially to refer me to dr sullivan as alot of people on the board said he gave a choice of rny or sleeve to patients. Then after i was told that i had to go through the bariatric registry. then i asked my gp to send another referral there. I thought i would be sent to hamilton bc of my postcode but 2 days ago i recieved a call from doc sullivans office with appointment to see the dr and also for orientation today. So its still worth sending a referral to your prefered doctor.
like others have said. You don't get a whole lot of choice in the matter, The bariatric registry assigns you to a centre based on your postal code. That centre assigns you to a surgeon based on their availabilty ( i imagine its goes like this "its his turn"). THe surgeon looks at your health profile, and assigns you the surgery that's right for you.
If you feel strongly about getting the VSG rather than the RNY (the rny is the norm), then you can advocate for yourself to get that one. Expect to lose that battle, unless you have some compelling reasons why (educate yourself on why, i'm not an expert on that.)
