Stomach Staples Recall

Ok so I just found out that my mother in law received a letter from the Ottawa Hospital telling her that they staples that where used when she had surgery ...well there is a recall on them. So my question is...has anyone else gotten this letter...

Also for those who had the surgery in the USA do they use the same staples...if there is a recall what does that mean for those of you who have them...

Usually if there is a recall on something you go and get it fixed or replaced...in this case not so easy...

Any input would be great!

Hi Soontobe,
I had my surgery in July and received a letter as well as a phone call. The staples and staple gun are the issue. Seems that some of the packaging was at fault NOT the staples or gun. The recall was voluntary on behalf of the manufacture. Tell your MIL she can rest easy.

eta: I went and read your link and it was the same letter I received. It does clearly mention that the packaging was the culprit. I would suggest if your MIL is at all concerned to call the WMC.

I received the letter as well, but if you go back in threads, there was a lot of discussion on the issue.  Others have asked at the clinic, and was told that it was nothing to worry about.  They are just advising everyone for the slim chance anything would happen.

Hey There,

I can't really add much to what is said above except that I too, am in that group. If there are some worries  over it,  give them a call and ask to speak to someone about it. I am sure they will take the time to answer your questions.

It is a world wide recall made voluntarily, and most assuredly on the advice of more lawyers than doctors.  The manufacturer advises the hospitals of the potential but unlikely problem and then the hospitals are in turn advised to send a letter by their lawyers.

If you look closely at the dimensions of the letter, you can clearly see that when, superimposed on someone's ass, it provides close to adequate cover.
