So today was my pre-op appointment in Hamilton @ St. Joes. It was quicker then I was told and thought it was going to be. I arrived at 915 got in about 10 and was out by 1130. Awesome! First I saw the nurse who took my blood (once she found a vein) and told me i'm the first surgery of the day on the 19th. Then I had an ECG which took about 4 min total and then onto the Pharmacist which also took a few min (im not on any meds) and my last stop was the anesthetist who qucikly went through what he was going to do and that I was in fact going to be placed in a special step down unit due to having a stupid
C-Pap machine. Anyhow that was it, nice and quick, only 6 MORE DAYS!!!!!!! IM SO READY!!!

I think the majority of WLS patients have  a c pap machine.. so tell me though what is a step down unit exactly?
Oh and congrats on your upcoming change of life.

thanks and its just so they can keep an eye on your breathing while you are waking up. A step down has a 1-1 nurse to patient ratio where as on the floor its more like 5-6 patients to 1 nurse.

I'm not sure that step down units are 1:1 at least none of the ones I have worked on. I don't know about St. Joe's as I haven't worked on step down there. Most of them are 1:2 or 1:3. Regardless yes a step down unit mostly looks like a regular unit and it's not like you are hooked up to any more machines than on a regular ward, you can still get up and walk around etc. Since you are having your surgery first thing in the morning they might not even make you stay the night there depending on their bed situation. If you are in good shape they'll send you to the regular ward if they have someone who needs that attention more.
