Iv never ever taken pre natal vitamins, even during both pregnancies I just could not do it...they make me so sick! So today was my one month follow up and I asked the nurse if I could please take Vita-Vim chewable instead and maybe an Iron pill or something extra, she slat out said no. Im a little sad, Im not sure I can get those pre natal ones down even in apple sauce..agh, gross. There are so many gross things on this phase of the diet including the stupid Diabetic boost I have to drink 3 of im choking them down and almost puking. I know i know I knew this was coming im just venting and waiting patiently for the next phase where I can have some cream soups!!! So very excited about that and have some ready to go.

Ugh - I hear you on the prenatal horse pills.  Made me sick as a dog when I was pregnant.  I think it's the iron used in them - totally constipated me and made my gut raw.  Luckily I didn't have to take them post RNY.  I take Centrum chewable multi and Proferrin for additional iron.  Hopefully they'll let you switch at some point.

The stage you're at is hard.  It kinda sucks, actually.  You'll looooove cream soups when you get to them...... and then you'll be tired of those as well. LOL

Hang in there.

i never took the prenatal vites pre or post surgery. Is it because your iron is low? I wonder why she'd say no just like that. What about bariatric chewables?

Some centres (or maybe even just one, not sure) have the prenatal vitamins as part of their required post-op supplementation.  Everyone has to take them.

Im 6 days post op and she just said no that they didnt have enough in them compared to the pre natal. Im going to compare later today when i have a min to do that. I didnt ask about the B.C and she didnt say anything about them. Im going to try them out again and see if I get the same sick feeling, my iron is normal so its not that.

Instead of talking to the nurse about it you should talk to the pharmacist. I think the nurse at St. Joes is great but pharmacology is not what we get taught a lot of in our nursing program. I'll bet she knows a lot about supplementation because of this particular program but her standard answer is going to be to stick to the prenatal. Also at this stage because of us just being on modified fluids we probably need more in the way of supplements. Your iron will be normal, it takes a bit to build it up so it will take awhile for it to deplete. The pharmacist might have a better idea on what is the best non-prenatal multivitamin OR what generally is the best prenatal that is tolerated better by most people. Call the clinic and ask to speak to the pharmacist that is attached to the program or ask to speak to Mandy in Dr. Gmorra's office and she can probably get you an appointment.

It still really bugs me that some centres are recommending pre-natal vitamins. The dietician at the clinic where I had surgery (Utica, NY) and also at the Ottawa clinic both say that the pre-natal contains too much folic acid for our needs and too much folic acid can mask a B12 deficiency.

I'm with Guelph and a Prenatal vit a day is part of the required post natal intake.  I've had one a day since shortly after surgery.  Swallowing it is a pain, but you do eventually get used to it (and I couldn't swallow pills to save my life pre-op...go figure).

I do also have a known B12 deficiency and go for an injection every 2 weeks.

I'm not sure if this might help, but I found chewable gummy pre natal vitamins in WalMart in Duluth (prolly any US WalMart would carry them).  I picked them up to take when I can't swallow that whole big pill.

Maybe you'd be able to find them and give them a try?  They're called VitaFusion Prenatal Gummies.

I thought they were pretty good.
Good luck!
