OT (long) I am feeling miserable! (Updated)
It is so weird. Almost a year to the day I was released from a 4 day stint in the hospital with some weird virus that caused me such severe bronchial spasms, that I couldn't string together more than a few words at a time. I was treated with Prednisone and an arsenal of puffers, nasal sprays, and 2 more antibiotics....oh yeah....had my WLS date canceled (for obvious reasons), and remained on "watch" by my respirologist for the next 2 months. In fact, when I had surgery later in December of that year, I had to have written consent from the respirologist that all was okay with my breathing.
So the last few days I have developed a cold, and wouldn't you guess it?? It is starting all over again! Started exactly the same way: a mild sore throat for about a day, then cold symptoms, and now I have been having the spasms for the past 2 days. I haven't slept because they are the worst at night. I am sitting upright to sleep, but this doesn't help at all, drinking tea, taking steamy showers, and started using all of the rescue puffers again. Nothing doing. My husband can't even sleep in the same room with me as I am literally coughing non-stop! So I guess it is off to emerg. for me. Yay :*(
Just for curiosity sake, if it were you, would you go to the hospital where the respirologist you saw a year ago has the records from your hospital stay? Or would you go to the hospital that you had WLS at? I know it is not surgery related, but sometimes I worry that if I go somewhere else where they don't fully understand the nature of how my body has changed, and my new requirements, they might screw something up. For example, I wonder if they will ignore my request not to have NSAIDS or give me something else that is really hard on the tummy because they believe it isn't a big deal. I haven't been to a hospital since surgery (except for follow ups). There is so much more to tell at triage now. hahaha. I'm a more interesting patient now.
I am sure that my worries are unfounded, but the last time I went in with this it was horrible. They quarantined me, and gave me a nebulizer mask treatment every hour on the hour which gave me terrible tremors and shot my heart rate through the roof. I guess I am in denial, and don't really want to go, but know I have to.....BOO!
I think it is time for a switch in profession where I don't work with germy kids all day....wait I have 2 of my own...sigh.....
....destined to be sick.

do you have asthma? i havnt had rny yet, but once every yr i get a cold and end up on prednisone, steroid inhalers, and antibiotics. with asthma when you get sick it goes to your lungs, but steam makes breathing worse for pl who have asthma, so i dunno. just something to think about :) I know you can develop asthma later in life.
when you go to the hospital, i hope you get good care!
I haven't been told that I have asthma. After everything settled down last year, I went for all of that crazy testing where you sit in this plastic tube-like cabin and breathe in and out some weird apparatus. Then they made me inhale sal****er mist in various concentrations and blow into another machine. The results of all of this were that my lung capacity and breathing were great- no asthma.
Dunno. Maybe I just suck at colds- or maybe I'm just a big 'ol suck? tee hee. In any event, It it late into the evening. I think I will just sit up and watch TV the rest of the night and go somewhere in the morning. My dr. belongs to an after hours healthcare group, so maybe I'll contact them first and see what they say. I really dread the ER.

Marny: A number of years ago I had a non-stop cough that lasted for months...all kinds of tests, no conclusion was had...puffers helped only a bit. I coughed up clear phlegm, people were afraid to be around me...
When it ended, my Dr., said: We don't know what it was...likely a virus....
Hope you're well soon, it wasn't fun...

Sounds very similar. Last year, they said it was a weird virus. What are the chance that I picked up the same sort of thing again? Yesterday in the staffroom, I had an eposide of coughing and spasming that was by far the worst I have had yet. The poor (male) teacher in the room at the time looked petrified (haha), like he was about to run for 911. I ended up vomiting in the trash can as that was the only thing available, and all of the coughing causes me to do that, especially now since surgery. I was mortified, but it was unavoidable. Once I start, I literally can't stop. sucks.
Poor thing, that sucks. I can say that when I've had to go to the ER, not surgery related, I go to my local hospital. I educate them if they're not aware and it hasn't been a problem at all. I've never been given NSAIDS or anthing else without my consent. Trillium Mississauga has been extremely sensitive to my needs, Marny. I can't imagine driving all the way to HRRH for anything other than RNY related concerns. I really hope you feel better soon! xo
