ADVICE PLEASE: cold medication pre-surgery?
Hi there,
The dreaded first cold of the season has arrived (thanks to 20 little students with every germ known to man, lol) and I"m starting Opti tommorrow. I am wondering if there is anything that we can take for colds this close to surgery, or if I should just ride it out?
Open to input!!
Thanks,
Nancy

Hi,
I was with Hamilton and had Dr. Hong. I actually had my surgery cancelled because I developed pneumonia just before my surgery date and was put on prednisone. I am NOT saying that anything like that will happen to you, but during the beginnings of my "cold" I was going to take Cold FX and decided to call the clinic just to check if I was allowed to have it, and they said definitely NO. I can't remember the reasons why, but I just remember being glad that I checked. If you decide to go that route, maybe just give them a call to confirm. Maybe they have since changed this restriction? Dunno.
I would get plenty of rest, drink lots of fluids, and all the normal stuff you would do to nurse a cold. Vit. D is a good immune booster that you can take. If you are like the rest of Canadians, you probably don;t have enough as it is :} They will still operate if you have a minor cold as long as it is not affecting you lower respiratory system. A sniffly nose won't likely cancel your surgery. Do monitor yourself though. If it seems to be progressing, see your doctor for the appropriate treatment. Don;t let it turn into an infection.
Feel better, Nancy!!

Immediately pre-surgery you can take anything that doesn't thin the blood, so no aspirin products or other NSAID products basically. The clinic may be wary of Cold-FX because an overdose of ginseng can cause bleeding. I can't see that being an issue if you take as instructed, but they apparently don't want you to.
Up your vitamin C and fluids and treat the symptoms with the Tylenol Cold products, you can take any of those and I find them really useful. I'm sure you'll be recovered before surgery.
