Hi guys,

I know this isn't a revision group- but the ontario revision group has no members ??? I have a question maybe you guys may have an answer...

I am going in for a revision to a rny on Monday - my question is that I have my last procedure about 26 years ago - i had lost alot of weight - and then it started to creep back up- i am not sure how this procedure is going to help me lose weight - because when i try to diet - i hardly lose any weight - is something wrong with me - i am wondering if this will actually help - has anyone had the same experiences as me and now since their revision you are back to losing weight...my last procedure was stomach stapling

It's going to help you in two ways. First, the pouch they make during RNY will be smaller than your stapled stomach, so you will take in less food. Second, there is an intestinal bypass that will help you for about 18 months as it temporarily causes you to not absorb all the calories you have consumed, making it easier to lose the weight.

Did they not discuss this with you?

You're also going to have ongoing support and access to a team of dieticians, social workers, psychiatrists, etc to assist you in making the life changes necessary to be successful, like getting rid of sugar in your diet, eating a protein based diet and supplemening with appropriate vitamins and minerals to stay healthy.

Haven't you met with these people already? Have you not found the appointments helpful?

Hi there,

Revision surgery seems to be a bit of a mystery - I didn't have clasees or had to do the same things you are all going through - I was recommended due to a stricture I have and had been going for a dilation surgery for sometime and that dr recommended I have a revision done.

So to answer your questions I haven't had real education on how the RNY will help - they wanted me to have the surgery to assist with the stricture...so I do know how it will help with that.

Does that make sense now??

You should request to meet with the dietician at the hospital you are having your surgery at so that you can understand the different stages of eating (fluids, pureed foods, soft foods, normal diet), what your diet will need to be made up of after surgery (mostly protein, low carb, no sugar), the need to supplement protein (whey protein shakes mostly) and vitamin/mineral supplements you will have to take for life. Which hospital are you having surgery at?

Hi ...I met with the dietician already and she went through all of that - she said that I had a good handle on my eating from my pervious surgery - so I am not really worried about that- but I was just kind of wondering today how the revision was going to be able to help me - I have hardly lose any weight on the optifast so that got me really concerned that maybe the surgery will not help with weight lose - I am having surgery at st mikes ...

Also I don't even know at this point if it will be open or lap - the dr said he will try lap, but most likely have to do open...

Thanks for helping me understand the procedure and the after care.

With RNY you also have malabsorption along with restriction. So it would make sense that if you are having the RNY you will lose weight again as you will not absorb everything. But remember it is a tool. You will have to follow the rule for good nutrition to lose and keep the weight off.

Good luck.
