Don't mean to be a "downer", but....

I am just so freak'in frustrated!!!  I stepped on the scale and have gained yet another pound and a bit.  That is almost 8 pounds in the last 2 weeks.  I have been eating as I always have, but have recently taken some suggestions from fellow OHers and cut out some things from my diet.  I just can't understand what is driving my weight up? A couple of pounds I can deal with quite calmly and attribute it to water weight, or maybe too many carbs that week, etc...but my goodness- at this rate I'll see 10 pounds gained by the time Monday rolls around, and I am more than a little freaked out at this point.  My 1 year surgiversary is coming up in exactly 7 days, and I don't feel like I am in a good place right now to enjoy it.  "One year out, and gaining like a mad woman" is not exactly what I want to post on the anniversary of my WLS.

Help!  Am I justified, or over-reacting??

There could be any number of reasons that you've gained in the past couple of weeks.  Realistically, it would be pretty impossible to eat enough to gain 8 pounds.  I highly suggest that you cut a lot of the sodium-type products from your meal plans and add a protein shake to your day.

You must be telepathic. I am drinking my fist protein shake in months, as we speak. Do you think it could be the fact that I have been on antibiotics for the last little while? By the time I am finished them, I'll have had 2 rounds which amounts to 10 days of antibiotics. I wonder it that is screwing with my system? Just trying to rack my brain for reasons.

They didn't put you on a steroid did they?  And yes, it could also be attributed to anti-biotics, meds, sickness, etc.

I was only on the prednisone for 3 days, and then Symbicort everyday (which is a steroid).

I guess it could be water, but I usually notice water weight around my ankles and other joints.

Steroids are notorious for weight gain.  I'd be willing to bet that's the culprit.

how are your measurements? you might be retaining water in your waist area. If its the steroids, what about your face? do you look fuller in the face than usual?

Hi there

I know a couple of people who used to post on here that swear by changing up your diet and adding a bit more fat for a couple of days, like having chicken wings or something. It kind of shakes up your system and gets things going again
Sometimes you need to change up your foods and that can help. You indicated you are eating the same as always, maybe something like this would help

I do agree with Karen, it would take a lot to make you gain 8 pounds though. Maybe you are retaining water or something

Keep us posted

take care

the steroids could be the bad guys, here, honestly, don't beat yourself up over it, Marny, its only a number.

Prednisone is an incredible drug...it works  like magic for what it needs to do, but the side effects can be mindblowing.  I was on it twenty years ago...had spent the whole year at university working with a dietician every week, etc., and got down to about 175lbs.  In the summer I had to go on prednisone for a really nasty case of poison ivy and in less than a month I was at 210. I spent 5 months on high doses of it and never saw onerderland again until a few weeks ago.

By all means, take it to treat whatever it is you need it for, but at the same time, don't beat yourself up over a sudden weight gain.  Once you are off it, you'll be able to deal with the few pounds in fairly short order.
