For those who went out of town for surgery

For those who went out of town for surgery, how long did you stay in the city you had your surgery in?

I will be travelling from London to Toronto (so not too far) and just trying to get an idea of how long I should be staying in the Toronto area after I'm released from the hospital. I know they recommend staying within an hour's drive for at least seven days and I want to be safe, but of course I want to get home as soon as possible to recover.

Anyone in London have any experience travelling for surgery?

Hello,
I live near Tillsonburg and I had to go to Hamiliton to have my RNY.  I stayed two nights and went home in the morning on the 3rd day.  I did not have any compications though.
Hope it helps.

I'm from Windsor and went to Toronto for surgery on a Friday and was released on Sunday morning and went right back to Windsor. They gave me perks for the car ride home and I didn't feel a thing. I actually slept almost all the way there.

I am from London as well and my plan is to return home after being released from TEGH.

Glad to see some people going home after hospital release and not having any issues. I want to be safe, but I'm sure the last thing I will want to do after being released from the hospital is spend a few days in a hotel. I am hoping if I have no complications I can do the same.

I will discuss with my surgeon this week at my appointment, but just interested to see what others' experiences have been.

Hey Northern Star.
I live 2 hours from the hospital where i had my surgery. I went home right from hospital. You have to see how you're feeling. If you have any inkling that things aren't right, deal with that.

Remember, you can reserve the hotel room for the longer period at the Hospital rate, but check out at any time. Sometimes they aren't so great at extending a stay at a preferred rate if you need it.

I'm in St. Thomas (so basically the same as you) and had my surgery in Toronto as well and came home as soon as they discharged me.  No, it is not recommended but did it anyways.  The nurses actually asked me where I was staying and I said at the hotel down the street.    Bit of a rebel here I guess...lol

Thanks for the responses everyone.

Good point about reserving the hotel - I can stay if not feeling great, but cancel if I'm ok to go home. I will make sure to ask about that when I make my reservation.

It all depends on where you live and your surgeon.

I am from Ottawa and had my surgery in Toronto.

They recommended to stay close by for 5-7 days.

I had surgery Wed, return to hotel on Friday and come home on Tues.
