Dukoral
On February 1st I am going to Nicaragua for three months on a mission. I have to take Dukoral because where I will be could have a chance of unhealthy water.
Has anyone taken Dukoral since having surgery? They say it is taken with a bicarbonate and I am afraid of the gas pains that will happen. Did you have any problems? I have to take it on an empty stomach for one hour before and one hour after. So no GasX until after that and even then I'm not sure it would be good.
Otherwise, I'll be making sure I don't have anything to do for a bit afterwards and a warm bath to help.

I took Dukoral before living in India years ago - long before my RNY. I didn't take it with a bicarbonate, it was just a little vial of clear liquid that I had to drink every day for a number of days.
There was one immunization years ago that I had to take a a bicarbonate. I think maybe for Typhoid Fever?
I don't think even if you did have to take it with a bicarbonate that you would have too much difficulty. I would drink it very slowly. If there was gas pain, I would think it would happen if your pouch filled up with too much air rather than gas pain like exists in the intestines.

Crazy! i think you should be OK... ask them if you can let the bicarbonate settle (I.e. is it made with a barcarbonate because it *needs* the bubbles or because it upsets the stomach or....? Also ask the pharmacist if you must take it all at once, or if you can drink a little at a time over an hour.
The bicarbonate is to protect the vaccine from your gastric acid, but as a RNYer, you have very little gastric acid anyway, so I'd be surprised if this was actually strictly necessary. I'd recommend you speak to a pharmacist who is familiar with RNY.
Keep in mind that the vaccine is only about 50% effective, so you will still need to be extremely careful with your water supply.

Thanks Pat, I live in small town Ontario where pharmasists come in from the city to get hours in. I could go in every day and have a different pharmasist for a week.
The pharmasist did talk to the company concerning my having RNY and did call me back about their saying I needed the bicarbonate and should be okay. I really did appreciate that attempt for me.
Since I leave in 2 weeks I don't have the time to ask more people. I didn't realize there might be a problem with taking the meds with RNY, (well at least not in this way). This proves that we really have to be dilegent in our health care.
I have been to Nicaragua before and didn't worry about this because I was there for 2 weeks and used bottled water the whole time. This time of course we'll use bottled water again but if we go to people's homes and eat there, that is where I am more concerned about having issues. With being there 3 months I just thought it would be best to take the Dukoral. We don't buy off the street and don't drink anything but bottled water, beer, soda or juice for my son. And make our coffee with bottled water too.
It's good to know that the vaccine is only partially effective anyway. So if either my son or I get sick we'll be prepared, I'll add Imodium to my list.
