Heads UP!!

I have made no secret of my credentials, I am a registered nurse, and work in the field of assessment and treatment of anemia. I have posted publically to this forum, on the subject of Bariatric related anemias. When contacted I have and will continue to give 1:1 advice via Private Message. As those of you, whom I have given 1:1 advice to, will attest I will often ask you to contact me at work so that I may document the recommendations I have made. 

Recently I have been contacted at my work place, by a third party (i.e. not someone I know from the forum, nor someone I had invited to contact me at my workplace)

If I have invited you to contact me at my work address, I have provided you with that contact information and I am fine with you contacting me. Providing this information to a third party, or researching this information and providing it to a third party is a breach of my privacy and confidentiality as a member of this forum and in the future will be interpreted as “stalking behaviour", or harassment  and will be acted upon as such . It may also potentially be a violation of the Terms of Service on OH

I am disgusted to think that someone from our Ontario forum would feel justified in doing so.  I'm sorry you went through this Leona and pleased to see you've taken appropriate steps.

To the person who did this:  I'm pretty much speechless.  What a complete breech of privacy. Thoroughly disgusted.

I respect what you have said but as I have said before in the thread about facebook joining a message board or being on the internet in general and expecting privacy and confidentiality is ridiculous. There are folks that could find out who you are, where you live and where you work in about 20 seconds. There are people that come on message boards just to be disturbers and post false information. It is sad and I hate being so cynical but I don't post a lot of personal information, no pictures etc and likely I wouldn't be giving out information such as you had done. I am also a RN, have worked primarily in the Hamilton Health Sciences hospitals and it drives me bonkers how much misinformation is out there and I try to correct now and again but some people refuse to be corrected so I lurk and read a good bit more than I post. Like yourself I want to help people and certainly because you've specialized you want to put out that information but I think you are putting yourself at risk by doing so. That's my opinion as a registered health care professional. I don't tend to offer a lot of medical advice because I can't see the person, don't know their symptoms and cannot do an assessment over a message board so won't risk offering anything that might be taken as advice. This is why telehealth is virtually useless in my opinion because no one wants to risk giving an opinion when they could be wrong and have something adverse happen. I am very sorry that this is happening and understand your anger and disappointment. It is too bad that this happens because it then stops people from offering anything useful.

I agree with everything you've written here.  I guess because I know a bit of background on the issue, it's a tad more scary and invasive than Leona has let on here in her post.  I myself have been very open on this forum in an attempt to build relationships and assist others.  This certainly has me re-thinking.  And that's sad.

I am also re-thinking my presence on OH.....trying to balance the  publicness of the Internet with my desire for an outlet for support for my own personal wls life....I just don't know how comfortable I am

I think perhaps I have been naive on the ability of others to extrapolate my info from posts etc....I deleted my pictures and blog some time ago because of concerns...

I wonder about some of our new "experts" that are now on OH.....and their general aggressiveness and how that will manifest itself on the forum and elsewhere...

I really feel a little sad right now...

I honestly can't believe this was done to you Leona. 

 You know how I feel about what has happened Leona.  Kind of like getting a traffic ticket and having your case debated by the clerks over the internet.

 Thank you all for your opinions and support.  I don't expect complete privacy and confidentiality, but I do expect people to have the presence of mind not to send nasty emails to my work place
