My sure fire cure, is 1/2 cup of Crockpot steel cut oatmeal
2 cups steel cut oatmeal
4 cups of water
1 tbsp cinnamon (or apple pie spice/or pumpkin spice)
Optional:
-raisins
-chopped walnuts
cook on high x 3 hours, stirring occasionally

I let it cool and then scoop into small snack zip lock bags /portion 1/2 cup.  I freeze each bag and pull a bag out each evening and it's defrosted by morning.  Reheat  in microwave add 1 tbsp sugar free syrup.
It keeps me regular no problems.  Let me tell you I suffer like you do too.  Diane

Will take a kayaking trip summer 2012, freedom

Thanks and have a great weekend

Hi Nathalie,
I suffered from the same problem but found relief when my GP prescribed Lactulose for me.  It has helped a great deal and I no longer have such a hard time.  I was concerned that my bowel would become dependent on it but have been assured by GP and surgeon that this will never happen.  I was prescribed 30ml per day so I split it up and take 15 in the am and 15 in the pm.  I mix it in with a glass of crystal light, you would never know that its there.

Hope this helps.

how long were you on it before it wasn't hard and became regular?

It took 3 - 4 days for it to really get into my system and really soften things up.  I also added 3 doses of benefibre a day to help with bulking up the stool.
Best of luck to you Nathalie.

Im still having the same issue. I've found prunes to work wonders! I was really backed up a few weeks ago and when that finally passed, I started on the prunes daily - I eat 7 at night and in the morning I'm good to go!

Hi Nathalie.

Are you taking a stool softener? Sounds like you really need one. I take ducosate sodium twice daily.  Also, like someone else said, lots and lots of liquids.  Try having a G2 every day.  I find that they helped with my bm's.

The fibre supplements are horrible for me.  I know it doesn't seem to make sense but, regardless of how much liquid I get in, fibre supplments (pill or powder) make things worse for me.

I'm 10 months out and still have bm issues, even with daily stool softeners.  If I haven't gone in 3 days, I take a whopping serving of MOM or use a glycerin suppository.

Good luck.  I hope things normalize for you soon.

Yeah, I did about a month of stool softeners but no success so that's when I switch to those formidable fiber pills...lol...but getting fed up.  Like I said earlier, I described it wrong, I'm not really constipated, I go about every day but really in major pain and takes forever to get a dozen pebbles...lol
We'll see, I'll have to speak to my GP and maybe go Allison's way, seems to work quickly.
Have a great weekend!

Nathalie that is still constipation even though you do go some daily.  It's not normal to have pebbles and take that long and take that much energy to go.  You described it very well when you said you were constipated.  You need to try and get rid of all the pebbles in one swift trip and then try to keep your bowels normal.  I had the exact same problem and the only thing that would work for me was to do the 1 tbsp of MOM every hour until I was good and cleaned out (did it when I knew I didn't have to go anywhere for hours)  After that then I added in probiotics and things have been fairly good.  If I feel backed up or get the painful BMs then I use the MOM again.  I haven't had to take MOM for almost a year now so things have improved.

I remember not long after surgery, I wrote a post about constipation and everyone was telling me about MOM, I did it for 3 days (2oz daily) and it didn't do anything, I still had to go to the ER....should I try it again?  Not only my head that is stubborn......lmao
