Protein Shots

A bit off topic, I am booked for knee surgery Tuesday and the rules for some procedures have changed, such that patients can have "clear fluids" up to 2 hours before surgery.

Right or wrong. . .my bariatric dietitian says its OK, I still have a protein shake every day (2 years out) I make a protein coffee every morning, and was worried about what it would taste like without the milk.  Then I realized using my protein powder the morning of surgery was also out because its "whey based" and as such the coffee would no longer be clear. . .ugh

I checked GNC for "protein shots"  chickie there tried to sell me some protein water that had 10 grams of protein in it. . .when I told her that was too low she chastised me saying 10 grams of protein is actually quite high... REALLY?!??!

Anyway I went to Popeye's no biggie as I do have a store credit there and was able to buy some protein shots there.  33 grams of protein 1 gram carb no sugar.  They are $3 each but the guy gave me 8 for $2 each.  The only had Mango/Peach and Berry fusion.  I tried the Mango Peach last night. . .OMG so ungawdly sweet!

Arguing with myself as to whether to knock it back in 3-4 gag fighting swallows and chasing it with water or prolonging the agony by diluting it in water. . .any thoughts on the subject??

I bought a few of the bullets years ago and found them way too sweet as well.  I ended up adding it to a bottle of water and then drinking it that way.  Diluted it was much better.

Hi Leona

I purchased protein shots pre-surgery in an attempt to ensure I kept my protein levels up early post-surgery

I dilluted them with water to make them palatable....I cant imagine drinking them as is....I think I would vomit

Just wondering why worry re your protein if its just one day....I am assuming you can go back to a regular diet post knee surgery...

Thanks Barb,

I will try mixing it with water today.

I get really nauseated and pukie if I don't get my protein, once I start the "vomit comet" its hard to get off.  I know its just one day but that's all the "addison's disease" needs to rear its ugly head.  I wouldrather do all I can to prevent it than play "catch-up" after.  My system is very finicky.

I also do not know how long I will be in hospital and thought they may be a little handier to use than hauling in my protein powder and magic bullet.

Leona, is your protein shot whey isolate?  I was told that the shots were no good for us as they were not, by my nutritionist.

I hadn't heard this.

I know a number of WLS who went with the protein shots because "they couldn't find" a protein shake they liked.

Is this statement specific to VSG?

I don't believe its linked to the VSG.  What brand is it?

I tried googling it but couldn't see whether it was whey protein isolate or not.  In any event, I'm sure its fine for a temporary solution.

I hope your surgery goes well.
