Questions about Humber RIver Regional Hospital
RNY on 05/02/12
Hi there,
I've been told it's an older hospital. How many people are in a room if you don't have extra coverage? Is there a microwave so I can bring my magic bag and heat it myself to help with the gas pains I've heard about? Is there wi-fi? Does someone have the passwords?
Is there a place for my DH to wait while I have the surgery so that after he can bring my stuff up to my room?
Thanks in advance for your help.

No Wi-Fi. Monica's right...4 to a room, microwave's available, just ask your nurse where it is on the floor you're on. It's likely in the same room as the ice-chip machine.
As for your stuff....the nurse will take it from you in admitting and they'll bring it to your room once you're there. That's what they've done with me [and recently my dad when he had emergency surgery on his wrist]. But if your hubby wants to take it, he can. There's a waiting room on each floor but they'll likely ask him to wait in the lobby area beside Tim Hortons so the doctor can find him easily when the surgery is over.

There is 2 HRRH hospital's. I was on Finch site and yes older, but very nice.
They don't have wifi per say but you can have your cell, I had my blackberry with me, they are cell friendly. If its for your ipad then sorry, I don't think it'll work.
The ward have 6 patients and they only have 1 ward room and please make sure that you do ask for Ward because if you say like me "I'm not sure if my insurance covers" they placed me in semi-private and had to pay 250 per day.
There is a waiting room that your husband can wait, and a Tim Hortons, the surgeon told my husband to wait at a certain place and went to find him after surgery. Amazing staff all around in that hospital.
If you have any other questions, don't hesitate!

Bariatric procedures are done at the FINCH Site only, there are no six (?)bed ward rooms. . .the max beds per room is four. Humber is Cell Phone friendly and if you have a rocket stick for your computer it works well.

HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT IRON AND/OR http://theironmaiden.ca/
I have a couple of small things to add re the rooms at HRRH Finch site.
I am not covered for a 2-bed room, only for a 4-bed room.
I stipulated that three times prior to admission and at admission.
I told them I did not want to pay extra.
When I woke up I was in a 2-bed room.
As soon as the worst fo the pain was over, I asked them to send me somebody from Accounting re the mix-up. She went into it in great detail, wrote it all down, and assured me that because all the 4-bed rooms were taken when I came upstairs, I wouldn't be charged for semi-private.
Of course, I WAS charged for semi-private.
I got very upset with them and blustered. A lot.
I called them several times from home, and when I went in for my followup went and pestered them at the Accounts Payable office.
They backed down and apologized.

You probably won't have time or incilination to do a lot of surfing or reading. I found I slept a lot.
=============================================
The waiting room is minimal so tell your DH to bring a good book. Not just while you're under, but when you're back in recovery - you spend a lot of time dozing.
=============================================
And finally - pay a little attention to the cleanliness of your room. I wasn't impressed. In fact a couple of times I had to protest quite loudly to get things cleaned up.
I cannot agree with those saying it was clean.
Bring your own hand sanitizer and Kleenexes.

Thanks for the info and the warnings everyone. I want to bring my Kobo touch to read, and thought I could post updates since it lets you browse the web, but if there's no connection, at least I can read a bit. (when I'm not sipping, sleeping or walking)

I was discharged from HRRH yesterday. Had a 2 bed room but there was no one in the other bed for the whole time I was there. Amenities were very limited.
I found the nursing staff frustrating and found that I had to push to get anything, several times it took 2+ hours for pain meds and it took 12 hours before they finally called Dr. Glazer about my sats being consistently under 90% and me having a terrible cough, he came in and ordered an inhaler but that then took another 7 hours to get, once I had it the cough cleared a lot and my sats came up to 94% (which in most hospitals is considered a danger zone but apparently not there). The nurse who was discharging me started the discharge paperwork on Dr. Klein's ok at 8am...I was discharged at 11:45 when I went to the nurses station to request the rest of my paperwork and found her surfing MLS online looking at houses. Do NOT let your pain get past a 6 before requesting meds because it takes them so long to get it to you, Wednesday morning I asked for pain meds at 8:30 (about a 6 lol) and they sent me for a chest x-ray and left me waiting until 11:20 before bringing the meds and that was after I called 3 times for them.
Advocate for yourself! You seem to have to at this hospital!
Good luck!

Wow. Sorry to hear you had such a rough time. I am a Nurse and you'd better believe they WILL not treat me like that-or else.
Thank you for letting me know your experiences. I will still let them speak for themselves (so to speak) but it's nice to get a heads up
