Does Tomato soup count as strained soup?

Hi,

May seem more obvious than I realize but they specify mushroom soup but do you think I can tolerate blue menu tomato/red pepper soup- or would it be too acidic?

Just wondered if there was a rationale to specifying?
Thanks (day 5 post op)

I was told to avoid tomato soup because it is high in sugar....didn't check the blue menu - is that just low-sodium or also low sugar?

Thank you very much for pointing that out!! Yes blue menu is only low in sodium with 11g sugar per 250ml (100 cal 2.5g fat and 2g protein).

Vs. Campbells regular cream of mushroom which is 1g sugar per 250ml but also 240cal, 21g fat and 3g protein!

Love this site- never a doubt in my mind now I can always find an answer- I think I will hold off on cream soup until my  1st follow-up on friday . They can give me a better idea I guess of what I want to watch for other than sugars and protein (cuz the cal and fat seem outrageous).

Tough to find a balance- always searching,!

you are on the full fluid stage?  I am through HRRH and I have been eating red pepper and black bean cream soup and it has a tomato type of base and has been okay.  I also had the cream of mushroom and the cream of broccoli and they were ok too.  I have added a crushed up cracker to it as well which seems to make it just a bit more satisfying.

good luck with your search for a good soup.

Thanks - good idea on the crackers! My husband keeps giving me heck- afraid that I'm pushing myslef too much ( and truthfully I'm afraid cuz I don't feel that "tight" feeling) but I will have a better gauge when I go to folow up as to how much I'm allowed to test myself.

Personally, I'd avoid the crackers.  White carbs that you just don't need.  This liquid diet stage is a great time to elminate those white carbs and get them out of your system.  Get your blood sugar and insulin regulated and functioning properly will really help you during the rest of your weight loss stage.

The tomatos themselves aren't bad..it's the sugar they add.  The creamed tomato soup (like Campbells) have added sugar I think. The can in my pantry lists glucose-fructose as the third ingredient (after water and tomato paste).  For many rny's - this can cause you to dump.  And personally, I avoid ANYTHING with Glucose-fructose or high-fructose corn syrup...that stuff is the devil of carbs, IMHO.

I personally didn't worry about fat and calories at your point.  You should only be eating about 1/4 cup of soup for a meal - a serving is usually 2/3c or 1cup - so you really aren't eating that much fat or calories.

I had campbells tomato soup made with skim milk while I was on full fluids. It had less fat and more protein than the low mushroom. I was gagging on the lf mushroom soup for some reason. I find a lot of silly things "turn" my stomach. I also added one crushed up soup cracker on the last day of my full fluids. I had no problems, but check it out with HRRH, better safe and sorry.

I found some low fat low sugar soups in the fortinoes health food section. One was cream of mushroom the other I think is cream of potato leak. I plan on adding some plain protein to up the protein.  I will be trying them Tommorow.

When are you at St Joes Friday? Mine is at 230.

Forgot to add it was suggested to make them with lactose free skim milk.

I wasn't told to avoid tomato soup and ate it regularly, no problem.
