I don't think you will find any surgeon that uses a general for a scope. I have had it done with zero sedation and I gagged but it's over fast. I have had it done with twilight and don't remember a damn thing. The twilight is probably the closest to a general that you will find. Many people even fall asleep with the twilight. Not sure if you have ever had a colonoscopy but they don't use generals for that either. Some people get knocked out from it and others just are relaxed and don't remember anything.
Tracey,
I read on this board recently that someone at TWH had a scope done while under general. I'm going to give the hospital a call tomorrow to confirm. The ER Sr. Resident did say that Grimsby does them while under general and that some of the smaller cities around us might as well.
He said the reason Hamilton doesn't is because they do sooooooooo many scopes that there aren't enough anaesthesiologists to be able to move people through the system fast enough.
A colonscopy wouldn't bother me being awake, but upon thinking about it for the past few months that I've been waiting I've come to realize that there is absolutely no way I can have an endoscopy done while awake. Heck, I gag and puke a little if I put my toothbrush too far back into my mouth.

I had 2 of mine done in small hospitals and one done in a private clinic and the most they would use was twilight. I gag easy as well but still managed to have 3 of them with nothing more than the numbing spray. Twilight with one and remember nothing and valium with one that didn't work so it was like I never had anything. If you can find a place that will do it under general then go for that but I think you may be amazed at how well twilight works. You are kind of in and out of it but remember nothing.
When he says he has to "re-do" the surgery, what exactly does that mean? Revise the RNY or reverse it? Is your body only rejecting the staple because of the ulcer or some other reason like infection? You may want to ask if it is possible to reverse the RNY and revise to VSG which has a much lower risk of ulcers, but this of course would only work if you have a low risk of any further staple rejection. I know Dr. Hong at St. Joe's has handled some very interesting revisions and the whole team there is fantastic. You are in good hands. Good luck to you.
I had OHIP approved Duodenal Switch surgery with Dr. Dennis Hong at St. Joseph's Hamilton on March 7th, 2012. Want more information on the DS in Ontario? Send me a private message!

Conscious sedation is what they do scopes with. It is less than general but you get amnesia with it, so you don't remember much.
