I went through a phase of horrible constipation.  MOM did nothing for me, but Ex-lax did.  I only used it twice but it sure did the trick - and quick!  Suppositories work well too and if all else fails, you can get OTC enemas.

 Hi Deb!

I'm sorry that the constipation is ruining your vacation - that sucks!

I would take a suppository. I was constipated once after surgery, and after taking a suppository and holding it in for an hour, I was able to go and I felt so much better.

I hope you feel better and enjoy the rest of your vacation!

the St. Joe's book recommends lots of fluid and activity.  Drinking warm water, coffee, tea,..

Add benefibre or metamucil.  Add a small amount such as 1 teaspoon the first day, then 2... 1-2 times a day until you have stool.

If you have no stool after 3-4 days, talk to the pharmacist about adding a product such as colace, senokot or milk of magnesia.  If you do not have a bowel momvement for 4 more days, give the clinic a call.

***These are the recommendations for early out, so you might not have to contact the clinic quite yet but it never hurts if you've tried everything...but if you haven't, talk to the pharmacist about those medications listed.

the grocery store might have MOM.

apricots? they're very much like prunes

drink a big glass of warm water first thing in the morning, that sometimes helps me go.

greek yogurt can perhaps be constipating. Try easing back on your calcium for a bit as well

running..that always helps me go, too

If you're so uncomfortable you can feel it sitting down an enema or suppository might help.

Also, warm tea can loosen things  (or coffee).

I take senekot which is a muscle stimulant. The general preventatives, fiber, fluid etc, will build up bulk above the constipation but won't help you now.

Deb if you feel really bound up I would bypass the MOM and do the suppository asap. I suffered really bad constipation early out as well so I can honesty say I know how you feel.

The advice I was given was to try MOM and if that didn't work I was to start Colace as well as the suppository. Nothing worked for me except the suppository, in hindsight the MOM and Colace was a complete waste of time thus only delaying the relief.

I hope relief comes soon for you.
I care.

for me personally senekot does not help I find I have to use ducolax and I take 3 at bedtime when I am really backed up.  I have also added colace (stool softener) 2 pills twice a day to my daily supplements.  I would for sure try an enema-a simple fleet enema, warm it up with warm tap water then try to hold it as long as you can at least 15 mins.

You might also want to take a couple of dulocolax the next night to ensure you are truly cleaned out.

If you have a walmart it is also sold as womens gentle laxative.  You can ask any pharmacist.

good Luck!
