Just wondering has anyone applied for ODSP right before surgery and were the approved?

Are you applying due to another illness or just because you are having surgery? 

There are definitely people here who were on ODSP prior to surgery and got approved. Do what you need to do and keep going with your application for WLS. It can happen.

ODSP is for people that have long term disabilities. I don't think they will cover you for surgery.  EI has sick benefits for that reason.

I'm not sure I understand why you would qualify for long term disability benefits simply because of surgery.

Tracey is correct. ODSP  is for people that are on long term disability. When I had surgery EI covered me while I was off work. You apply under medical benefits.

You may want to look at this from their website about eligibility.  I don't think anybody has ever been off for a year after surgery and you have to be to be eligible along with other criteria.  If you don't qualify for EI sick benefits then you may have to see if Ontario Works would help you out while you recover.

To receive Ontario Disability Support Program Income Support, you must meet the definition of a "person with a disability" as defined under the Ontario Disability Support Program Act.

Under the act, a person with a disability is someone who has a substantial mental or physical disability that:

• is continuous or recurrent
• is expected to last for a year or more
• significantly limits their ability to work, look after themselves, or get out in the community, and
• has been verified by an approved health professional.
