Breaking the Silence
the vets for scaring the newbies and the story I have to tell would likely scare some vets, I shudder to think how the Newbies may feel.
Quick recap I had VSG in 2009 and successfully lost just under 200 pounds. My sleeve was more of a green bean than a banana and left me with huge GERD issues which eroded my esophagus almost through to the outer lumen. I also developed a massive hiatus hernia through which my entire sleeve passed into my chest an snuggled up all close and personal like along the right side of my heart. This life threatening condition was discovered in September and I waited in the "elective surgical queue until 18-Dec. Necessary repairs were made with laparoscopic surgery and I went home 23-Dec.
27-Dec I developed Nausea and Vomiting and could smell fecal matter in my vomit (TMI? apologies BTW optimist tarts nothing like shift trust me o this point). I was admitted for emergency surgery and Dr Sohi and Hyuhn spent over 6 hours re building my gastric pouch bypassing large sections of small intestine that could not be opened etc. I spent 3 days (the first intubated) in the ICU.
I again was recovering well until 04-Jan when I obstructed again. Hagen put in an NG tube through my gastric pouch into my duodenum so as to not damage my gastric pouch. I needed more surgery but this would-be unsafe for at least 6 weeks
fast forward tomorrow begins week 6 surgery is projected to happen at the end of February. The NG is out and I can tolerate 30-60 cc of full fluids at a time. I am allowed 1 extra small tummies steeped a day. I am on TPN and am part of the extended stay program here at Humber.
I am not spilling for the "poor you" responses these posts often get. Simple a request that if you find yourself at Humber Finch with a few spare minutes strict your head into 529, window seat and say boo to the stir crazy chick setting up housekeeping there

totally agree this ain't all sunshine, rainbows and unicorns! It is serious surgery with sometimes dire side effects. Newbies that are scared away by such testimonials should be scared away imo. If I was near your hospital I'd stop by just to say Hey! I'll have to do it from here! HEY!

So sorry all this is happening to you. I hope the next stretch breezes by. I'll be there on Feb27th. Really hope you'll be sprung by then, but if you're there I'll be sure to stop by

Hugs,
Heather
