Carbs, Fats, and Sugars
Ok, you should have got all the info with your papers from HRRH. I am also going to HRRH. It says Total fat for the day should be 5% or less a day....Saturated fat aim for less than 10% a day......Trans fat 0.......Sugars aim for less than 10 grams.......sodim 250 mg or less......fiber more than 2 grams or 15% a day.... This is what it says on my paers from HRRH. ... Its very important to know these things. It should have been disscused when you seen the NUT... I would contact them to make sure you know before yo get home from surgery.... I hope this helps.. Good luck Tuesday ,keep us posted.. Take Care Krista..
Kristabe careful with the "5% or less a day part". They mean the label/food item should be 5% (3 g) of recommended daily intake of fat or less per serving. Not 5% (3 g) for an entire day.
The way it is written is kind of convoluted. Those numbers for sodium, carbs, etc. are all per item/serving. With the exception of the Saturated Fat which is a daily recommended maximum.
I actually asked about the 5% thing as the way it was written seemed "off" to me... I was told "the label/food items fat content should not be higher than 5% of a recommended daily intake per serving". I hope that makes sense. I wrote that down at my initial appointment... Pre-op.
The kicker is that post-op they will scrap daily carb and fat goals... Even if you try to pin them down they won't "tell" you typically, but they do have "guidelines" for us to use in selecting food. Carbs are not forbidden but carbs from sugar need to be limited. They seem to have no issue with what I am consuming re fat (and I know I am higher than many for carbs and fat because I follow the 40/30/30 and am not a low carber as I get my protein from food).
The 1 month booklet from HRRH says the following:
Label Reading
Here are some quick label reading tips:
- Always look at the serving size
- Aim for less than 10 grams sugar per serving
- Read the ingredients
- - they are listed from most to least
- - Anything ending in -ose is a sugar!
- - If sugar is in the first 3 ingredients stay away
- Choose foods that are low in fat.
- - Look for less than 5% daily value of fat or 3 grams of fat or less.
Hope that helps.
ETA: FYI a recommended daily intake for fat based on a 2000 calorie day is 60 g. That is where the 5% = 3 g comes from.
