Carbonated Beverages...Again
Big smiley face over here :). If its uncomfortable to drink, then don't drink it. Also, I'm a month out. I don't think I would try it any sooner then that. Tummy does need time to heal before giving it bubbles. I don't plan on drink Perrier all the time but its a nice change from plain water and sweet drinks. I'm enjoying one now.
My sense is that every surgeon (and their team) has very difference views on the carbonated beverage debate. Before my surgery (20 months ago - RNY), the nutritionists were (and still are) VERY anti-any carbonated beverage. My surgeon has been MUCH more middle of the road about it all - he said that if I wanted it and could tolerate it, it would be an OK thing on occasion. He has been much more concerned about finding a lifestyle that is comfortable for me and keeps my weight stable.
For me, it's been nice to know that I could have it if I wanted it. I still haven't - and it's been 22 months without carbonated beverages, but it's still nice to know. I know how much I love Diet Coke and think it would be hard for me to just have it once in a while, so I'm still off of it. I might treat myself someday, but I'm also trying to keep going without it.
Sorry you got beat up when you brought it up previously!
The "carbonated beverages" issue is such a HUGE expectation of the Ontario Bariatric program, that it is outlined on their webpage:
http://www.ontariobariatricnetwork.ca/faq.aspx
Carbonated beverages can cause problems after surgery, as they produce gas in the small stomach pouch. Most people find this very painful. You need to stop drinking carbonated drinks 2 months before surgery to get you use to not drinking carbonated drinks after surgery.
No one is trying to lead you astray here on this one. This has been preached since the inception of their program in 2009.
That said, your surgeon or centre may have a more "permissive" attitude when it comes to carbonated beverages. It's surprising as most surgeons in Ontario say a resounding NO on this one. (I had surgery in the states and was allowed to have them past the initial period). The surgeons in Ontario must just be starting to change their views on this idea because this is the FIRST time I've ever seen it posted that a surgeon said it was okay....in the last 4 years. What surgeon was it?
The thing is that this philosophy is NOT UNCOMMON throughout the world, not just Ontario. You will have some surgeons that believe that carbonated beverages stretch the pouch. It is one of the "unknowns" of surgery.

I don't think your quote from above says it is strictly off limits for everyone. It says that it CAN cause gas main and that MOST people cannot tolerate it, so it is better to get used to not having it. My guidelines were that I can have Carbonated beverages if I tolerate them well. I do, from time too time, have diet pop(maybe once or twice a month). I absolutely cannot drink pop out of a can, but fountain pop causes me no discomfort at all.
Yes I realize that. I've been through two orientations for windsor and they are pretty adamant. Surprised.

Surprised that after the last four years of "no carbonation allowed" rules in Ontario that Hagen is all of a sudden going against the grain.

Hi Dawn
I have attended several orientations in Hamilton- as recently as this week....and they are also strictly in the "no carbonation" camp....and that is from Anvari who is the head of Bariatric in Ontario
Saying all of this....I will have the occasional low carb beer....by occasional I mean I have had under 10 of them in 4 years....and I didnt touch carbonation until I was post 2 years.....
As for diet pop....I will never drink it again......just read too many horror stories and tales of people gaining....not sure of the physiology of this....and its anecdotal...however....I have read of many more post ops indicate they wish they never started diet pop- then those who drink it with no ill effects.....
Each to his own....we all have to choose our route in this journey....for me though...I dont want to buck the system too much....
