Carbonated Beverages...Again
I'll stick to what my surgeon says. I think he is much more knowledgeable when it comes to this then a nutritionist would be. Also, like I said in the literature from HRRH, carbonated beverages are listed on page 22 of a booklet called Nutrition Guidelines after Bariatric Surgery - Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, as foods that may be difficult to tolerate after surgery. Things like steak, pork chops, rice, pasta, mushrooms, lettuce, and many others are also on this list. That does not tell me in any way that it is forbidden, just difficult to tolerate (maybe). I've had many things on this list with no problem. If it were forbidden, the title would be "Things Forbidden After Surgery".
Thank you everyone here for the support. I was joking about an apology. Guess jokes don't go over well here either.
Also, I'm not saying go crazy and drink carbonated beverages constantly, but it's nice to know that we can have one as an occasional treat.

I'm happy that Dr. Hagen told you yes since it is obviously important to you.
I also asked him and he told me "no, it is not good as it will stretch your stomach".
So it appears - for me anyway - that the "jury" is still out on this one.
But you need to do what you think is best for you
You know what sucks?
Hearing an answer you don't like. It's way better to keep asking until you get an answer you do like.
Honestly, if you think that the replies on your thread in any way "ripped you a new one", then you haven't been around here very long.
No one is trying to stop you doing something you want to do, they are simply telling you what they have been told, and I can tell you - EVERY centre slightly different. I met a woman at work who went to Guelph and was told that she couldn't have red meat for 6 months after surgery.
EVERY centre warns against the consumption of carbonated beverages for whatever reason, so no one here was "wrong". You asked, they told you what they knew. You didn't like it. You asked your doctor. You can have what you wanted. What is the problem? The fact is, you are doing the same thing they did - relaying the information given, and I really hope that everyone takes the time to weigh opinions before doing something they regret. Apologies are not necessary.
Don't ask for opinions if you don't want to hear them. Don't ask for answers, the forum isn't populated with doctors. This is place for advice and sharing experiences, it should never take the place of real medical input.
This entire Bariatric Registry/Centres of Excellence, etc. is a government funded experiment. Maybe different centres are "tweaking" things to see what works best for most people. As far as I am concerned. People should take the time to find out what their centre "says" and DO IT.
I specifically asked dr Hagen about Perrier and he said it was fine to have as long as I tolerated it. And as I said in an earlier response to this post, our HRRH booklet lists carbonated beverages as something we can have if tolerated. Why would they say that if we can't have it? I rely on my doctors answers and this is what he told me. Said he loves Perrier too.
My opinion is do whatever the hell you want...you will know eventually how your body handles things...
But I must say I hate, HATE the tone this conversation has taken...

Hi Juls
The problem can be....that sometimes by the time you find out how your body handles certain things....the damage is done.....either immediately or down the road...
I think people are upset because the op is only 4 weeks out.....and I appreciate she discussed this with her surgeion....which in my opinion is the correct thing to do.....I do find his comments unusual...however it is what it is
I dont know whether anyone really knows the carbonation issue....but as Dawn mentioned...it is stated as a no no both in most Ontario programs and elsewhere around the world
Sylvie can choose her own route.....and she obviously has.....but people are going to give their opinions as we all know.....
Re the tone.....I thought it was quite OK...other then the comments from those that chimed in along the lines of "thats showing them Sylvie"....etc.....but maybe thats what you were referring to ......and that is just my opinion
I agree 100000000% thats why I said "do what you want... you will EVENTUALLY find out how your body handles it"....;) My paperwork and discussion with my surgeon (Dr. Cyriac) said 100% NO carbonated beverages...If her surgeon said different...well then as an individual you choose if the risk is worth it. At the end of the day its your choice.
The tone I was referring to was not the OP's post it was what happened after that.
This happens all the time. You come on a public forum ask questions or ask for opinions (in general not necessarily about this subject) and then get offended when people share with you.
I CHOOSE not to eat refined carbs or drink pop, I log every bite that goes in my mouth. That is my choice.
Anyone else has their choices to make. I am not judging anyone. I try to never jump on anyone. I know for MYSELF that if MY surgeon said "go ahead" and drink pop or eat chips or pizza's ok and burgers are a health food... and everywhere else I looked said NO WAY... I would go with the majority....
HAVING SAID THAT:
I think the pop issue is two fold... I think some people can not handle the gas from it... so it hurts going down and in the belly.... and second that for a LOT of people pop is a trigger. Contains a LOT of sodium. and has no nutritional value whatsoever.
I will continue to choose not to drink carbonated beverages.... Thats my choice.
:)
