Time off work?

I'm still far away from surgery, but I'm curious about how long is the average person taking off work for recovery?

How soon are you returning? What's the maximum the surgreon has recommended. Has anyone left work a week or so before surgery to do opti fast?

I took two weeks holidays. To do opti. I was diabetic and I wasn't sure how my bllod sugars would be. Then the surgeon booked me off 6 weeks.

Okay.. 6 week after surgery, that's cool.
I was thinking of taking a week off before.

Did you find 6 weeks was enough?

My suggestion would be to take time at the start of Opti - versus a week right before surgery. I'm on day 3 of a pre-op diet and feeling terrible as my body adjusts to a sudden drop in calories/sugar/carbs, etc and i really wish i had thought ahead to book a few days off.

In terms of after, my surgeon said it was really up to me. I think it all depends on how well recovery is and how flexible your job is. My GP gave me a note for up to 6 weeks. I am anticipating going back within 4-6 if all is well (i only work pt so i am lucky that way)

I think you may be right. I think the first week on Opti would be best off.

Im lucky that I would be able to take off 5-10 weeks off if I need it after surgery.

I may have to see if my doc would write me off my first week of Opti. I wont have the vacation time to do it.

I never took any time off while on Opti but I did have 6-8 weeks off after surgery and I took the whole 8 weeks off because I didnt start to feel myself until I was at least 6 weeks.

Hey Katie, and Sorry for hijacking the post!

My bosses at my work ( Work for the city) Know that I am in line to do the surgery, and suggested that I take Sick EI leave. But I am debating it because...it takes up to six weeks to get that first cheque and I am hoping to be back to work by then so I am not sure if it is really worth it to go through all that paper work.

If anyone else knows a better route I'm all ears.  I do currently have the money set aside to pay the bills for the time I am off.

I know that when I went on sick leave before my mat leave they only delay payment for 2 weeks - they will never may you those 1st two weeks... but after that I had no issues.
