Ladies - PMS and WLS?

I've never really suffered from PMS before in my life, since surgery it's getting worse as each month passes by. This must be the high anxiety/low mood month because I've been wavering between bursting into tears to feelings of complete dread and hopelessness for about 2 weeks now. I was prescribed BC pills already to try to get my periods under control and more manageable.....but so far it's not working.
I have discussed this issue with the NP at my center, and a " fill in " for my GP ( she's been on holidays through most of the summer )--no real answers ( other than BC pills ). I'm at a loss as to what to do at this point.

Frustrating, isn't it? No one can help, or they tell you to do the same things that you already know don't help... Weird that it started after surgery, I wonder what it was about the surgery or weight loss that links the pms. I'm hoping that once I get surgery it will help... Fingers crossed anyway.

My problem has always been that because I have suffered severe anxiety since I was a kid, on the third month when things get really bad and I feel incredibly depressed, sometimes the depression doesn't go away. It's like the anxiety feeds on the pms symptoms and the depression grows along with it. Then I go in to full blown clinical depression that can take years to overcome. Most of my twenties were spent that way. But for the last two years I've been able to keep the anxiety under control, which in turn helps the depression. But then I still have these weird little blips in the month that are only linked to pms. I can always tell when it's coming, it's like that big red eye in Lord of The Rings opening... "I see youu..." everyone has to duck under furniture so that my big red eye doesn't focus on them, lol. But I guess the point of saying all that, is if you're feeling depressed more weeks out of the month than you're not, or you feel the hopelessness more often than not, make sure to keep your doctor/the fill in aware, so they can prescribe antidepressants or talk about other methods of treating depression. It's so easy to slip in to it, and sometimes it happens so slowly we don't know we're depressed until it's been three months and the symptoms haven't let up. I hope you find a solution.

Hahahaha! Best Post Ever!

It's funny you mention pms. Cause this is my first pms bout since surgery. And like you i turn into an angry hell beast one moment then a sullen nobody who will just sit in the corner and eat worms. And so this month i'm not angry she beast i'm worm girl. And sadly worm girl can't console with cheetoh's and cake. Since Im only two weeks out I have only been able to have pureed mango and protein shakes as a treat. But so far as I can tell pms seems to stay the say, at least 2 weeks out!

*hugs*

Rats to pms staying the same! Maybe as time goes on and your body adjusts, it will get better. Although from what other people are saying it sounds like it's a no to getting better :\ I'm doing better this month on laying off the Cheetoh's and cake, but it's a struggle let me tell you. As you well know! I was tempted to buy a cheesecake at the Superstore this afternoon but I used my better judgment. I'll just make myself some stupid jello instead, lol :p

Hope you are feeling good, aside from being worm girl!

I can totally relate to all of you! I was on BC to keep everything in check, especially my mood, but already after 1 month being off I can tell it's not going to be so pretty once I hit month 2. I've been debating starting my BC pills again when I get my next period in a couple weeks (understanding my body won't totally absorb it), but I'm kinda desperate. My 1 month apts with nurse and dietician aren't for another couple weeks and my family doctor isn't completely familiar with the RNY processes. Has anyone else tried BC pills post-op?

Hi SabrinaStrength,

If you aren't taking birth control pills for birth control, it doesn't matter if they don't get absorbed 100%.  Just use another form of contraception as well, like barriers & gels.

I take Lupron - so I'm in chemical menopause only because without it, I range from a suicidal crumpled up ball of woe in the corner, to an almost homicidal maniac 1/4 weeks of the month - I have severe PMDD Pre Menstrual Dysphoric Disorder, which is worse than PMS, but all the posters on this thread may really have PMDD, instead of 'mere' PMS.

To offset the lack of hormones and to help slow inevitable bone loss, I take 1mg of Estrace (plant estrogen, not mare's urine derived estrogen) and Micronor, a progesterone only BC pill (2 days on, then 2 days off).  That instruction to take the BC pilll 2 days and then skip it for 2 days really confused the pharmacists until I told them it was for partial HRT ;D.

I really, really recommend that you get a referral to Dr. Robert Casper of TCART - http://www.tcartonline.com/about-us/team/dr-robert-f-casper. html.  He follows women on Lupron and has done so for 17 years as well as running a fertility clinic.  He's one of the nicest doctors you will meet ever too.  As his CV states, he has over 200 publications.

Good luck,

Jenn.  :)
