If you happen to live near a Sprouts, Jimbo's, Whole Foods, Bristol Farms, or any other health food store, you may want to try a whole foods based iron supplement. Whole food based vitamins tend to be gentle on the system and usually don't cause nausea, constipation or any of the other problems associated with regular OTC supplements. Hope this helps :)

I get violently nauseous from most iron supplements too. After a bought of anemia (even pre-op) my PCP set me up with some iron pill samples and they worked like a charm. You'll have to ask at the pharmacist (they're non prescription) for them, but I strongly recommend Palafer supplements. They come in either a liquid or a pill. At London Drugs, I think I paid around $20 for 30 tablets.

I had RNY and my first batch of blood work is showing a deficiency, and my nutritionist believes it's because of the malabsorption with my surgery, so I've switched to liquid. After tasting it tonight, I will really suggest the pills if you can take them.

Iron can be tough on the digestion for sure. I take FereMAX with little trouble. The other day a member of this board who is an anemia specialist ( RN/blood specialist) posted about her new blog focusing on anemia and treatments, called "The Iron Maiden". This is a MUST read and here is the link, please read it:

My multi's (which contain my iron) make me nauseous so I take them with a protein shake. I find the thickness of the shakes helps coat my stomach & then the pills don't usually bother me. Sometimes they still do & if that happens I eat something.
