Sleep study test

Ahead of my first appointment (social work in Jan) I went and did a sleep study test. I told the nurse (in Feb) about it and she had me sign a paper allowing the hospital to access my results. She said she had no concerns with me health wise but just wanted a copy of the test results. Problem is...the results still haven't come in yet! I will be finished with my appointments as of Wednesday but I'm worried they are if these results are in by then everything is going to go wrong

Good morning!

Don't worry about the results of the sleep study messing things up.

Your Weight management Team will go looking for them.

Sleep study is important and part of the diagnostic tests required prior to WLS.

It may be one of the added medical problems that meet requirement. It is also very important that they confirm whether or not you have Sleep Apnea as it impacts how you are treated after surgery.

If you do indeed have Sleep Apnea? You will need to start using a CPAP or BIPAP machine.

Our Weight Management Clinic requires that you spend at least (4) in recovery room after WLS. It is also important that you bring your CPAP or BIPAP machine with you to hospital.

Don't worry about results. Everything is going to be alright.

Take care

Sandra.

Hi Sandra!

Thank you for replying :) I didn't realize that the results would take so long to get sent to the doctor's office. I also didn't anticipate finishing all my appointments next Wednesday! (My last appointment was bumped up from April!) So I guess I just got a bit anxious that maybe my file wouldn't make it to rounds since that result wasn't ready! But you are right, they will go looking for it :)

Thanks again!

Kayla

Hi

I am not sure how your sleep study place works.

I had my study done at the hospital and was told it would take 4-6 weeks for report. I have obstructive sleep apnea and the hospital called me after 48 hours to come in. They set me up on CPAP and figured out what my pressures to maintain my airway and I went to Inspiration Medic (any sleep apnea provider) & they set me up.

Maybe no news is good news. Do you snore?

Thank you for sharing your experience!! When I was younger (16 years old) I had a sleep apnea test done and it was negative (I let the nurse know about this) although I have been told I snore. I read somewhere that neck size counts as well? Mine is 15.5 inches. I'm sure if anything went wrong they would have let me know by now, so I'm going to remain positive :)

You can get the results right from the sleep dr you went to. That's what I did.. and the hospital can also get them right from there as well with your permission. It won't stop anything in your process... all it will do is whether you will need a cpap machine in recovery..and extend your time possibly in recovery.

My first sleep study took 3 months to get the results back but my last sleep study, they gave me the results the morning that I left. Why not call where you had the sleep test done and ask what their turnaround is? I have always had to book a follow up appointment after a sleep study to get the results. They wanted to see me even if I didn't have apnea. All sleep clinics seem to do things slightly differently so I'd ask if I was you in case your file got lost or something. Never hurts to ask. Regardless of the results, it won't delay anything. If you have apnea you just have to get a machine and be compliant in using it. I've had apnea since 2002 so have had many studies since to see if it ever would go away after WLS.

I ended up calling! The receptionist was shocked that they hadn't faxed over the results so I told her I needed them by Wednesday. We'll see :)
