Pain control issues

While I was in hospital (discharged yesterday) the IV pain meds and the crushed tablets were making me vomit. And yet for some reason the kept giving them to me. I would vomit about 15 minutes after each dosage, like clockwork, then be fine. But my throat became very irritated and started to bleed.

On day 2 they switched me to liquid Tylenol. Two doses, both times I IMMEDIATELY vomited it up.

And what did they discharge me with? Yup, liquid Tylenol. I was not a happy camper. We picked up some 500mg capsules and crushed them into applesauce, but that's a lot of powder and I couldn't get it all in my pouch with the sauce. And even still, the liquid Tylenol is 650mg, so all last night and this morning I've been getting less than half the pain dosage.

My surgeon is away today, but I had a follow-up with Dr. Hagen. God bless him, he said "well that's not working, would you like some percocet?"

I am so much more comfortable now. Do NOT let them send you out without a viable pain control plan. I felt like the nurse thought I was over-dramatic or a junkie or something. It's major surgery and they can't expect us to walk and to breathe well while in pain!

Oh no. Sorry to hear that you were in pain. Glad that you were finally able to get comfortable. I think too often clinics are under pressure to not over prescribe something like opioids. But if you need it, and nothing else is working then they should do it. Great advice about not letting them let you leave without anything that works. Hope your recovery is quick!

Glad the pain pill thing is hopefully sorted out. I had Klein for a surgery. I heard the new hospital is awesome.

I had the exact same reaction and they 'cut' it with gravol. Made a world of a difference! Just in case you want to do that with something slightly less addictive.

Great suggestion! I may just do that in the next day or two, I live in fear of becoming constipated.

Everyone will heal differently and have different pain control needs. I'm so glad the doctor was able to give you a medication that is suitable to your needs right now.

Constipation can be a real issue, with that med and as a result of this surgery in general. Take the necessary steps to stay one step ahead of not becoming constipated. If you are not taking anything for that right now, I would recommend speaking with your doctor about it.

I hope you are pain free and off all meds soon, and have an easy recovery from here on out. :)

I was sent home with Tylenol 3s and a stool softener. The pain went away pretty quick for me and I was off the pain meds within a few days of being home. Glad you have something that works. Happy healing.
