VSG vs RNY

Just waiting for my surgeon appointment and what is weighing on me is which surgeon I will be allowed to have. The nurse told me for RNY they like to keep it no more than a bmi of 60 and mine is 62 :( I have read and researched and feel RNY is the better choice for me. Any one experience being turned down for RNY and what has your experience been with GSV. Thank you in advance.

Hi. I initially wanted the VSG and they recommended the RNY and and I've been super happy with it. People who have had the VSG are also happy with theirs.

Do you by chance have acid reflux? They usually give RNY's to people with Acid reflux because VSG surgery can make it worse.

I personally would just go with what my surgeon suggests as they have your best interests at heart. They want you to succeed and they want to give you the tool that will best help you. It's up to you though.

I dropped 4 BMI points (23 Lbs) in 3 weeks on my Optifast liquid pre op diet, so they may not be concerned about those 2 points as you may lose them during Opti and be down below 60 BMI in time for surgery, which would qualify you for the RNY. If they don't bring that up, suggest it to them if you feel comfortable doing so.

Good luck.

I have a friend that lost 140 lbs on VSG recently. So, even if you do have one of those, they can be quite successful with potentially fewer complications. Also, you can also do a second step later on and have the DS for further success. I have another friend who did that also. Good luck and keep us posted on what your surgeon says!

I went through ottawa, and my starting BMI was 65. I had RNY, but i signed the consent form for both, in case a sleeve turned out to be the better option. I am glad i was able to have RNY, but think i would have been happy with the sleeve too.

Congrats on your upcoming surgery! exciting times ahead!

Anyone with bmi over 60 should research the duodenal switch. That would be my first choice of surgeries at that bmi. Second would be rny.

Long term studies say that patients who are most successful with Sleeve are those with around 100 lbs to lose. Those they are supermorbidly obese don't do as well.

I think you will be happy with either. You need to be under longer for VSG, and they don't like people with BMI's over 60 staying under for too long. It will be up to your surgeon, but I know lots of people who got RNY with a BMI over 60. I wouldn't worry too much. Educate yourself on both just incase.
