Hey Dina!

I would very much like to attend the meeting.  However, I have to work Saturday morning and then I will be taking a flight down to southern Cal in the afternoon to visit my dad.  I will be off on Monday due to the federal holiday so will return home by dinner time that day.

Okay bmi  41.5  appointment OCT 27th.  I will need to lose 5% that will put me under 40.  Any suggestions? I am begining to worry about qualifying.  I have major knee pain. borderline sugar levels- horrible heartburn.  And really really would love the surgery around DEC 15th so I can have 2 weeks off.  Am I dreaming?

What: Portland Baltasar Support Group meeting When: TOMORROW! Saturday, October 10, 2009 Time: 10:30 am to 12:30 pm Where: Cedar Mill Bible Church, 12208 NW Cornell Road, Portland, OR 97229  (There’s a good map to the church and of the church building on their web site www.cmbc.org ) Who: Anyone interested in knowing more about having surgery with Dr. Baltasar, pre-ops, post-ops, their support people, and those who are still trying to decide about the whole thing. Park in the rear of the building, there’s handicap parking there. Once you’re inside the building, look for the sign for the elevator – take it or the stairs to the second floor. We are in room P201 – across the way from the restrooms and water fountain. We normally get together for lunch after meetings, but I’m gonna bail on you guys this month. First, I’m NPO for 21 more days, and second, we have a family Birthday party later that afternoon at our house, so I’ll have lots of last minute stuff to get squared away. There are some important announcements that are going to be made – so please come! I’d also like to start teaching a series on how to read your post-op labs. Bring your most recent run of labs with you, okay? If you’ve got them spreadsheeted, bring a print out, too. Anyone have any clothes they want to bring and swap? I’ve got some stuff that needs to go to a new home – good quality, gently used. Bring stuff along you want to swap, okay? And hey – bring your before pictures if you’re a post-op! We’ve got a couple of brand new post-ops who are coming, and they really need your encouragement! Okie dokie – that’s about it. Let me know if you have any questions! Email: [email protected] Cell: 503-887-6147

Topic: RE: Gastric Bypass RNY has ruinned my life.
I am sorry you have had such diffiuclty with the rny surgery.  I think we all go into weight loss surgeries knowing that there is some risk involved.  It is a matter of weighing our current or growing weight related illnesses with the risks associated with the chosen surgery (or that surgery adivised to us by our doctors).

I know that I was facing some weight related illnesses and chose to have lapband surgery to help me.  There are times when I wish I had chosen rny and other times when I am very happy with this choice.  I have  had some complicaiton (port flipped and overfills) and needed to get them taken care of (the port flip needed a second surgery).  In all if I didn't lose another pound or had additional complications I would be satisfied with my choice.

It was the right amount of risk with the right amount of payoff and so far it has served me well.  I have lost 83 pounds in just over a year. I have some hair loss but my activity levels have exploded.  I can travel with relative comfort on airplanes.   I no longer take high blood pressure medicines.  People look at me and smile as apposed to look and then look away quickly.

From your description it sounds like you have had a hard time and I hope that you can figure out a way to gain some happiness with your surgery.  Have you thought about a revision?  Have you discussed your frustrations with your doctors?  I wish you well!

Topic: Groups & Activity

The last several months have been fairly busy ones here at OH and we are really excited
about this upcoming release. First, long overdue is the public release of OH Groups. You
will now be able to start and  manage your own public groups. Second, is a major update
to Health Tracker....Activity! We are planning to release these new features on Wednesday evening, October 7, 2009.

OH Groups

Getting to OH Groups is easy. Just click on the Groups tab at the top of any page on ObesityHelp. OH Groups allows you to start and manage your own groups, you can find groups that suit your interests and find support groups in your area.
If you are looking for an OH Group that focuses on a specific topic, you can browse groups by category.

Activity

To get to your Activity Tracker, click “My OH" at the top of any page on ObesityHelp, select “Health Tracker" on the left and then click the “Activity" tab.

Understanding your total daily caloric expenditure requires more than just knowing how many calories you burned on the treadmill. In your Health Tracker settings area you are now able to estimate the caloric expenditure of your resting metabolic rate (RMR) and lifestyle. These estimates are integrated and displayed with the caloric expenditure of the activities you have logged.
Your exercise log allows you to search for and add strength training exercises, cardiovascular exercises and general activities to your daily log. Caloric expenditure is auto calculated for a number of activities already included in our database of exercises. Pie charts display details about caloric expenditure and time for each type of activity.
Sets can be added and subtracted from strength training exercises. Reps and weight used can be entered for each set.
A number of details can be tracked for cardiovascular exercises and general activities. Some of these variables include, time, distance, calories burned, average heart rate, average power, altitude gained and average grade.
If you can’t find the exercise or activity you have participated in, you can also add your own custom exercises.
Other updates include the ability to create list of your favorite exercises, reports have been updated to include a number of activity items, the nutrition search has been enhanced and we have managed to slip in a sweet macronutrient report under the “Reports" tab.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns about the features in this release, please submit those here.

If your are new to ObesityHelp or have not used ObesityHelp's Health Tracker before, you can learn about the first release here and the second release here.

Topic: Gastric Bypass RNY has ruinned my life.
August 2002 I weighed 320 pounds I am 5'7" tall, I had RNY surgery at OHSU by Dr.Deveney and Dr. Macabee. Looking back now, I was a beautiful woman who had no health issues from the weight I had a great life and a great job. Since surgery, 2 months postop I started getting the sick, all food would make me so disfunctional, nausea, and exhausted. More and more medicationswere added to help combat the horrible symptoms but it just masked the pain. It got so bad that I had to guit my job, go one social security disability, and have a feeding tube installed into my stomach. I was under 100 pounds. My health deteriated so fast that I when from having a beautiful smile with nice teeth, now I have no teeth, a full set of dentures at such a young age. My doctors had me on so many medications that I was litterally addicted to narcotics. I started having seizures and I barely have any memory of the last 7 yrs of my life. I am 39 yrs old, off all the medications, I have had to gain weight to survive, but I live with daily pain and I haven't really left the house or socialized for 5 yrs now. I don't know how to live like this anymore, this is not really living. I feel like such a failure.
