My Body's Thermostat is Broken?
Except for during my menopause years (age 38-48) or the worst heat of summer, I've always cold all the time.
A few years ago, I had a complete hysterectomy (uterus & both ovaries), and have been on HRT since then (I know, risky, but my moods were a mess before I started the HRT). My Premarin dose was reduced in January 2008. At the time we reduced the dose, I didn't notice any change to my experience of heat/cold.
Since losing weight after WLS, I'm always HOT all the time, yet I see other folks on OH who complain of the opposite - they can't stay warm enough.
I will discuss this with my GYN when I see her for my checkup in January, but I'm curious to know:
Has weight loss affected your body's thermostat? In what way?
Thanks,
Jean

Ohhhhh Yesss I've changed too. I was always hot.... but now I'm cold a lot. The kind of cold that goes right to the bone. There have been times when I thought I would never be warm again. Its a strange feeling. I never did take my feather comforter off the bed this summer. We don't get scorching hot here in Western WA but I use to sleep with no comforter in the winter.... I didn't think I would ever wear sweaters or long sleeves but I sure do now. Millie
yuppers i am cold now too since losing this weight....if i get cold i am freezing!!!! need to get heat on here now and seems i can't find the right temp so i stay warm...(good thing i have rick to keep me warm..woohooo) if i eat to much sugar i get warm but the feeling passes soon enough...not often but sometimes while sleeping i need to kick off the covers because i get warm...never had "hot flashes" until WLS...weird huh??
hugs

My thermostat is definitely broken since my WLS one year ago.
During my 6 months pre-surgery I was diagnosed with Hashimoto Disease (a thryoid condition) and began taking synthroid for that (I had been freezing most of the time until then). Six months after my WLS I had my last period and went directly into menopause, having my last period in 4/2008. At that time I began the worst hot flashes ever and started taking black kohash and other herbal supplements without any relief. I finally gave in and began taking estrogen and progesterin.
So here I am 1 year since WLS (10/23/07) and 115 pounds lighter. I'm grateful for my weight loss but remember a couple of months ago when I was having an unbearable hot flash thinking that I'd gladly invite my monthly visitor back instead of these incredible hot flashes. Thanks to the drugs I'm on, I'm finally almost able to have my thermostat working, but it's a balance to keeping it at the right temperature. Good luck and make sure you have your thryoid checked.
Best wishes for a happy medium!
