Good morning Cindy & all OFFers -
Oatmeal is not my friend. Returning home after the support meeting, I was cold and wanted something warm and easy to eat. A bowl of oatmeal sounded good. The last time I ate some was about 1 1/2 years ago. Now I remember why it has stayed off the menu - it doesn't like me at all. It produces a rumbley, grumbly, unhappy belly.
Confession Time:
We have the OFF directory thanks to Joyce and Floyd. I have had the pleasure of meeting a few of the Sisters in person but feel a connection to the others too.
Sometimes I read what is posted and would like to talk to the person. It would be nice to offer support or just say "good job" The problem - I feel too shy and uncomfortable to invade on the phone.
There you go - I have outed my feelings of shyness. It is better than when I was young but still often holds me back.
No comments are necessary. I just wanted to get that off my mind.
Kisses
Annette

It was so good to talk to you yesterday. I'm glad you weren't shy about calling. I used to be shy (imagine that!) but a lot of that was because of my lisp. Thanks to a wonderful 5th grade teacher, Sister Madonna Marie, I was directed to a speech therapist. I was able to get help and from there, I blossomed. I was still quite shy in college when I had to interview people, and even when I got my first job on a newspaper. I think moving away to Montana, away from all my friends and family, helped open me up. My mom is always amazed at all the friends I make ... she says, "You always find someone to help you." Well, if I didn't, I'd be all alone, and that's not fun at all. I'm a people person; I like to be around people. That's why being stuck at home for four weeks is so tough on me.
Finding the sistahs and brothers on the OFF board has been a godsend to me. Whenever I need a pickmeup, I pick up the phone and reach out to one of my friends. It is so much better than eating junk food, let me tell you! Your phone call did a world of good for me. Thanks for being my friend!

Brenda, I bought a yogurt machine from Amazon.com. It makes eight one cup containers of yogurt. When I got it, I bought an extra set of containers. That way I can make a batch when I have a couple containers left.
Here's what you do. Buy yourself a package of yogurt starter from a health food store. You only need this when you first begin making yogurt.
Use 1/2 gallon of skin milk. Add to that 1/2 c of dry milk (while the milk is cold). Heat the milk to 190 degrees (for me this takes about 19 minutes in my microwave on high -- stirring about every five minutes or so). Let the milk cool about 55 minutes (my yogurt machine came with a thermometer that tells me when the milk is cool enough to add the starter). Add starter (either the package you bought for the initial batch or a container of yogurt from a previous batch you've made). Stir the starter into about 1 1/2 cups of the warmed milk with a whisk -- mixing thoroughly. Add the 1 1/2 cups of milk back into the 1/2 gallon of warmed milk -- mixing thoroughly. Pour the warmed milk into the containers. Put the containers into the machine. Set the timer for 10 hours. Let the machine do the work. When the 10 hours has passed, put the warm yogurt into the fridge. Let it cool completely (( think that they recommend at least six hours) before consuming.
That's it. Not hard at all. You can use a higher fat content milk which yields a thicker, creamier yogurt -- but we use skim milk to keep the calories down. The yogurt will be tart so we add Splenda to taste and flavor the yogurt with coffee (instant crystals), sf pudding mix (a couple of teaspoons per container (or to taste)) -- use your imagination as to flavorings.
It is good for you as the yogurt cultures are fresh.
Good luck. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Brenda,
I found this site about yogurt making. Sounds like it is easy.
