Big question about stomach pain
Ugh, we ended up calling 911 yesterday afternoon for severe stomach pain. I've had this before, it's in the upper abdomen near the chest, across the top of the abdomen. It's breath-taking, sweat-pouring pain to where you almost pass out. This is the fourth time in five years this has happened to me. I suspect it was all the fiber I've been eating, but I really don't know. CT scan was negative, except for stool in the colon. Last April when this happened, I was worked up and ruled out from a cardiac standpoint.
Big question....does dumping do this to you??? I'm only trying to prepare myself for WLS and what could happen. Dumping does not sound pleasant by any means, but is the pain this severe???? I NEVER want to experience this again. It starts off as a stomachache and before you know it, you are doubled over in excruciating pain.
All is well today, although stomach is still somewhat sore. I'm fine, though, thank God. Other than that, I worked today and cleaned around the house.
I hope you all have a lovely weekend. Blessings to everyone. God Bless!

I'm thinking gall bladder also. Did they check for gallstones? I don't think eating a lot of fiber would cause that kind of pain. But I'm no doctor. I've never had pain with dumping just nausea and dizziness, throwing up, that kind of stuff, kind of like having the flu for a couple of hours.

If you have not had surgery yet & you are getting these kind of pains My thought would
also be gallbladder. Alot of cases it was taken out the same time you have your RNY surgery. The pain from a gallbladder attack is quite similar to what you have explained.
I am just wondering if the ER checked the at all? If they did not find gallstones, than
it very well could have just been an attack. Do you remember if what you ate before this happened? Was it Spicy? I am glad you are feeling better, but, I would check with
your regualr doc about the gallbladder itself.

Good morning,
Thanks for the replies. I already had my gallbladder removed about 12 years ago. I'm not sure what is causing this, but I do suffer from GERD, although this was definitely not GERD. It seemed like something was obstructed or gassed up in there and then perhaps moved??? I see my PCP this week and will discuss this with her then.
I mainly wanted to ask if this was anything like dumping and someone replied that dumping was similar to the flu. That's a good enough answer for me.
Have a great day everyone!

I hope you are somewhat relieved as to the dumping pain. My experience with dumping has been very minimal. In the very beginning after my surgery, I watched my carbs very closely. Also, I never even tried anything sweet or deserts or any of that stuff!! I am nearly a year out and have experimented around a little bit.... :( I know I shouldn't, but I have. When I "dump," I actually feel very queasy and weak. I lie down for 30 minutes to an hour and then feel fine. When I go out to eat or over to someone's house to eat, I am careful and steer clear of too many carbs, fats, and sugar. That way I don't get that queasy, weak feeling and am fine. But some people dump and actually vomit and gets really sick for a few hours. I am soooo thankful that I have never done that.
I hope they do find out what your problem is soon though. I know that must be miserable when it happens. I feel that if you follow the rules after surgery and watch your carbs and sugars, you won't have a big problem with dumping. Best of luck to you.

Sharon,
Thanks for posting. I haven't had WLS yet. I'm working on my nutrition classes/weight loss journey now. I experienced this pain on Friday and it was awful, but I'm fine now. I was just wondering if dumping involves this much agony. From the answers posted, no it doesn't - thank goodness for that - I don't ever want to go through this.
Again, thanks for taking the time to repond. Have a nice Sunday afternoon.
