Fosamax---who takes it? Any problems?

Hi Susan,
I've taken Boniva and Actonel.  I recently had a dental implant and that's when I ran into the side affects.  In rare cases this class of drugs can make your jaw bones unstable, and therefore unable to accept an implant.  My dental surgeon did tests prior to doing the implant to assure the drugs had not compromised the bone.  It was fine.  He said he's never run into a problem but.....   So that's all I know about side affects.  Blessings, Mary

Hi Mary,

If you dentist says he's never run into a problem, then this would confirm Michelle's statement that jaw necrosis happens in less than 1%.

Thanks for the info!

Susan:

I too had osteopenia.  I've been on Fosamax for over a year now.  My last bone density test was normal.  I've had no problems taking it either.

Good luck.

I also take my Fosamax every Sunday morning, The very first time even with drinking lots of H2O I had horrific heart burn, it lasted for 3 days. I was scared to take it for a month afterward, but I have taken it for a good 2 years since then with no problem. I just hate waiting the half hour to take my Thyroid meds them wait another hour to take rest of my meds and have food, its just inconvienient..I was miffed that my doc didn't even take my bone density before he ordered it, just because of my age and Arthritis meds. About 5 years before, after, years of arthritis meds, my doc had my bone density done and it was perfect.

Yeah, they sure don't say anything about these things in the commercials, do they? Well, they do say you can't take it if you can't stand or sit for 30 minutes, and I always thought that was weird, but now I get it.

What did you do about the heartburn?  I still have GERD and take Protonix for it. Sure hope that will help.

Thanks, my dear!

Susan

I take thyroid in the middle of the night since I'm up ANYWAY for that whole middle-aged woman thing.

What good idea ! I drink all through the night. I must sleep with my mouth wide open as I wake up bone dry pretty often, I will just sit a synthroid by my cup.

Some brilliant soul thought of that. Um, not me. LOL

Why waste a perfectly good pit stop, tho, right?
